thanks for that. the thing that really tickles me is that i've pretty much built this thing without cad or even much measuring for that matter. i just winged it and got really lucky about things fitting my mental pictures. some places have a quarter inch of clearance or less. i've run into some snags as of late, though. my pretty powder coated oil pan had a pin hole in it and was seeping oil. it looked like a black fleck in the dark silver powder. i had to remove the exhaust to pull the oil pan and replace it. i found a really clean one in my garage and just gave it a quick coat of the matte black rust encapsulator paint i used on the chassis. yesterday i noticed that there was something funky with the cam gear. i used an adjustable gear, half of a pair for a twincam engine and the aluminum center seems to be made of really soft material - it sure as heck isn't t-6061. the slot in the gear the locates on the pin on the end of the camshaft now looks like an upside down cross.....and i haven't even started the engine yet! that happened in the cumulative time of my cranking the engine with the starter to establish oil pressure and cranking to check for the signal from my trigger wheel pickup. i was about to try to start the engine, too. the timing was off so i dialed everything back in but i don't trust the cam gear. i'll be off to the local wrecking yard to pick up a late model fixed cam gear and going back through the timing again before i try for the idle. also, a member at teamswift was selling off his project parts and i got a sweet deal on 2 spal pwm-fan controllers. those give you razor sharp speed control of radiator fans. i'll set one up on my air to water system and the other one on my engine radiator. i'm still plodding along.

I really like all the gauges. Anything that looks like something from an aircraft while sitting in the drivers seat is alright. |

i split time last night and tonight working through the rear and final section of the exhaust. everything has been fabricated, tack welded, and fitted a dozen times. it turned out really nice and it's tucked up in the tunnel under the car really well. i have to remove the center and rear sections one more time to do the full welds and coating, but the next time i install it, it will be the last time for a while. the clearances through the rear suspension are really close, with the spring and the sway bar link maybe a 1/2 an inch from the pipe. i'm thinking about adding a couple of hooks with thick rubber rings to hold the pipe centered up so it doesn't swing side to side in turns. pushing it by hand takes a lot of muscle to make it hit the spring and link but i'd rather install the hooks while i have the car on jacks. nothing pisses me off worse than an exhaust rattle. tomorrow, saturday, will be a rain day so i don't know how much i'll be able to do. i want to get the exhaust done and i'll post some pics of the final product, though. i'm getting closer to trying to get the engine started.

Exhaust dropping off does it for me Seriously, I over do almost everything, adding the extra hooks is a good idea

i finished the final welding and installation of the exhaust by noon today (saturday.) wagon stopped by today and he urged me to try to start the engine. i got the netbook set up and plugged in the injection and ignition fuses and rolled the starter for effect. we got the engine to fart through the exhaust and it sounded like it wanted to start a number of times. i made some changes to the ignition timing when the engine acted like it was lighting the fuse before the pistons were all the way to the top. the timing changes got it to fart through the intake. i'm pretty sure i have injection, even if it isn't at the correct time, and had to use the flood clear mode several times. i also had a couple of problems with the comm port closing out on the tuner studio app. it seemed like it was not liking comm port 3 but it would find the controller again by running the comm port detection app. the coil on plug arrangement makes it all but impossible to use my timing light but tomorrow i'm going to try to rig a plug wire to the cop so i can get the pickup clamped on to read the number one plug. i'll also run back through all the set up tables on the megasquirt software to make sure i haven't done something stupid like invert the spark outputs. i may even break out my little o'scilloscope to look at my v/r signal. so, around 10 am tomorrow, i'll be back out trying to start this beast. wish me luck.

you guys made me figure out how to post videos to the web. my close personal friend and partner in crime, wagon (or chuckwagon) used his fancy cell phone to record this. my cheap digital video camera came in today's mail (but i still need to get an sd memory card for it.) wagon shot some video of the first attempt to start the engine. i'll try my hand at posting a video for you guys. So close. I'm anxious to hear it. And see it run. |

Too much timing. I am sure you know this; (but, some others may not) When you hear the engine hit hard (even sounding as if she wants to run backward) while the starter is turning, the timing is too high. Since you are using a stand alone ECM, only you know how to back the timing down. May I offer some advice - Set your timing map to keep the timing from adjusting through the rpms, until you get the engine running. This will give you a solid reference as you work out the minor details. I use the jumper on new engines and even after I replace a Timing belt. |

shultz, you and i are on the same page, brother. there's an option in one of the application fields where you can select "fixed timing" or "use tables." fixed timing is like using the jumper wire on the stock ecu so you can use a timing light to check base timing. on the other hand, if i select use tables it allows the ecu to apply cranking advance based on an auxiliary table. the biggest problem i ran into was that the ford coil on plug units won't allow the clamp pickup on my timing light to go on. i took a spare cop and adapted an old plug wire to it so i can use my timing light. i hit a snag (after this particular video was shot) when i inadvertantly selected an ignition type in the ms tuning application which fused 3 ignition drivers and whacked the micro processor. i have all that repaired and i'm ready to go at it again this weekend. i'm on the straight up learning curve with the software and the hardware but i'll get it running. i'm just slow.

my buddy, wagon, is over today to give me a hand. i worked my way through some megasquirt snags this past week, did some rewiring to the board, replaced 3 transistors, and re-flashed the processor. it was running great on the jimstim test rig. yesterday i ran into troubles with the starter which just would not run at all. wagon hauled it off the engine today and we found a bad solder joint for the spade connector that fires the solenoid. a little work with a 260 watt soldering gun took care of that. after we got the starter replaced, alexpressler stopped by with his buddy, on their way to the junk yard. i was sort of preoccupied but alex took a long gander at ol' blue. after we got back to business, we almost had the engine running. it was trying real hard and hitting good. i may have a problem with old gas and just a small timing offset. it started to rain so we put the charger on the battery and we'll give the starter a chance to cool off. we're taking a quick break for a smoke and some fluids before we head off the the gas station for some fresh fuel and back to the car for some more fun. update to come. |
