Dang! You and snowfish make me feel dumb and worthless; the monster turbo3 build and little red with a heart threads are bad for my self-esteem. That car is awesome beyond what awesome defines. Dang!

my partner in crime, chuckwagon, and i spent another 5 or 6 hours on it again today. we made some progress in sorting things out, found a crappy coil on plug unit and swapped it. fouled the new plugs and swapped those. we also dropped the timing belt back a tooth on the cam gear which improved the idle and throttle response. we had the engine starting pretty reliably even though it was loading up with fuel pretty badly. the ignition and fuel mapping as generated automatically from loading engine data came out skewed due to the 6 cylinder spoof/ hack doubling the rpm. i might have that worked out now that i have reviewed the data logs. it requires yet another spoof, dividing the rpm at the bottoms of the ignition and ve table by 2 and manually entering the new rpms at the bottom of each row of cells in the software calculations. two very unsettling things occurred at the end of the day. with the computer disconnected from the controller, the engine won't run. when i reconnected the computer, the controller had cleared the processor of it's firmware. i had to pull the megasquirt back out of the car, put it back on the test bench, reload the firmware, reload the tuning file, etc. it tests out 100% on the bench but this is the second time that the megasquirt has lost it's little digital mind in this manner. wagon and i were able to fix a couple of small oil seeps that only showed up when the oil pump was operating. 53 pounds of oil pressure makes those things show up. now that the fresh engine has some time on it, the compression is coming up. it's nearly impossible to roll the engine over by hand and we had to trade the standard ratchet in for one 3 times as long to make the timing belt tooth adjustment. the cam that suprf1y sent me is a lumpy little beast at 800 rpms. the idle will definitely get set to 1000 rpm on this mill. there were a couple of times when i thought the car was actually going to jump right off the jack stands.i ordered my parts to upgrade the alternator from the 55 amp stock g13 unit to a 105 amp delco cs130 alternator. all the new "pinball machine" controls, fans, circ pump, multiple coils, etc. outstripped the capacity of even the 55 amp upgrade to the original 35 amp alternator. of course the 3000 watts of stereo amps in the trunk draws a bit of power from the system, too. onward and upward. |

Have you found a megasquirt forum to diagnose the issue of the unit losing it's firmware when getting disconnected from a computer? |

i have a direct line to a couple of people who are megasquirt experts and they have been scratching their heads. one guy said that i must have a serious ground issue but i think not. i've been through the wiring several times and it's not all that involved. i was an electrical engineer for 30 years and specialized in instrumentation and process control. all the instrumentation grounds on this car go to a single point on the mounting shelf for my ignitors - gauges, boost controller, laptop, megasquirt, etc. from there the 1/4" aluminum shelf has an 8 gauge wire running directly to the battery ground post. i've even used my o'scope to eliminate the possibility of a ground loop. this is the second time the megasquirt has lost it's little digital mind in about 6 weeks. more disconcerting is the fact that the controller doesn't seem to want to run at all without the supervisory computer attached. i even closed out of the tuner studio application with the engine running and it continues to run. when i try to start the engine with the netbook removed, the engine won't hit a lick! i'll get it worked out. i'm not worried about that. i just think that i got a crap ms2 daughterboard and it'll cost me $117 to get another one. |

In the last picture you can see one or two connectors sitting next to your e-brake that aren't connected to anything. When I pulled my interior I don't remember disconnecting anything but the seatbelt connector, what the heck are those two other connectors? Edited by Geo dude, Sep 3 2011, 02:26 PM.

all the verts were built in japan and their chassis wiring harnesses were designed to support manual transmission car and automatic cars. the 2 connectors you see on the hump are for the automatic cars. one is for the shifter illumination behind the gear selector and the other one is for the electric park position lock release. even though it was a tick shy of 100 degrees today i did a lot of the little things on my never ending list. i drilled out and tapped the mounts for the emergency brake cable brackets and replaced the bolts with stainless steel. i removed the covers for the brake and fuel line run on the bottom of the car, hit them with a wire wheel, painted them with the eastwood rust encapsulator, and sprayed the bottoms blue. i have a bag of all those odd fuel line mounting bits, new old stock, that i was saving to do the polished stainless steel tubing swap. the fuel lines for that mod are 50% oversized and i'll get around to that some other time. while i had the covers off i cleaned up the floor pan and bottom corner of the firewall, especially under the steel lines, where a leaky brake master cylinder reservoir had ruined the paint. rust encapsulator and seam sealer finished that job and i even caught the bottom edge of the frame horn where the internal frame sealer hadn't covered everything when it was dripping through the pinch weld. the mounting tray i had made for the laptop mount out of hot pink plexiglas literally melted from the heat of the interior with the windows rolled up. i found a nice piece of anodized hard aluminum and fabricated a new tray. it's big enough for either the 8.9" or 10.1" netbooks. i had to break the edges to stiffen it up. that was tricky to do in my garage without a real sheet metal break. i used little stainless steel nuts and screws and the velcro strap from my first piece. it's been bothering me that i didn't have a working tachometer on my dash. the triple coil on plug electronically actuated ignition isn't friendly with the oem tachometer. there's a documented work around in the megasquirt documentation that uses a transistor and the spike from a relay coil to make the tachometer work. i modifed the megasquirt controller to get the output and built a little tach translator box to mount under the hood. i used the little sealed relay from the metro a/c system without altering it to remove the pole actuator. all the ticking will be under the hood so i figured that it won't bug me and after a million or so operations the pole piece will fall off on it's own. anyway, i wired it in but haven't gotten back to the tuning thing to try it yet.all my other work is geared towards getting everything i need to get done to drop the car off jacks stands. i have one last task before that happens. i have all the pieces parts together to swap a 105 amp alternator for the stock upgraded 55 amp unit. that should take care of my electrical load problems. ol' blue will move to the garage soon. old man winter is just around the corner.
