heck, there's not many people who even know what a klystron is anymore. metal tubes have all but disappeared. i think ge is the only us company that is still supplying them. i was a radar tech for about 6 years back in the magnetron days (class c radar.) getting hit by lightning, directly or indirectly, has got to be a bitch! i've been popped with high voltage discharges a few times but my nervous system damage was temporary. |

Very cool and interesting. Will Megasquirt be fitted with a Faraday cage for EMP resistance from the Borg? ;-) |

tofu, the blue motor has a kkk ko4 on it, oil cooling only. this winter's motor has a water cooled td04 on it. both are as supplied by jess tremblay, owner of turbine tech, with his custom crafted manifolds and turbo outlet pipes. the exhaust manifold on the new engine came polished and ceramic coated in silver - excellent craftsmanship as usual from turbine tech. i got some 320cc/min injectors that have caps and pintles on the that atomize the fuel instead of "squirting." they don't flow as high a capacity as the 460cc/min injectors i used on the monster but their pintle response time is faster. this year's black engine isn't for making as much hp as i can. i want to tune it for 130 hp, the injector sizing is calculated to support a max of 153 hp. i chose the injectors for faster cycling with sequential operation to allow me to have more control over injector timing and a better idle characteristic. when i set up the detuned controller file i should be able to maximize fuel economy and scale back the boost to 6 or 7 psi for commuting. i know that the reference to a faraday cage was only joking around but, honestly, the outboard hall effect conditioning circuitry does use shielding due to the box location over the injectors. the emp from those coils firing could theoretically hash the timing signals so i used belden shielded cable and will bolt the hobby box for the little board to the grounded intake manifold bracket. pics coming after i work some assembly techniques through the process. i churned out 2 sets of hall effect timing sensors, one for the new engine and the other to retrofit to the blue engine in the spring. if you haven't been following the group buy for turbine tech 4 point lower braces, the price is as low as you'll ever see it for the newest aluminum unit. the group buy has been extended to the 30th of january and there's still time to get in on the deal. |

i spent a little time executing my plan for consolidating the hall effect conditioning controls for outboard mounting. the enclosures i got were twice as big as they needed to be so i split them in halves with mr. hacksaw and a sharp plasticut file. i found some grometts in a can in the garage and made all the access holes on one end of the box. the conditioning boards are very small. so small in fact that it was a major effort to get the sensor wiring done. there's about 80% free air in the enclosure and the boards don't generate much heat anyway. i used the mounting bracket for the intake manifold as a mounting point. i used good belden shielded cable, the gray cable in the pic, to make sure that i didn't induce any noise into the sensor signals. i also used it for the output to the megasquirt. the cam angle hall effect has the black cable in the middle. here's the gear tooth sensor for the new project engine ready to mount in a L-bracket. this timing method has turned out rock solid and super clean from an aesthetic point of view. the gear tooth sensor is color co-ordinated with the crank pulley. i still have enclosures left over so i'll build the tachometer translator for the new engine in a matching box. and, of course when i built the unit in the pics i also built a second one that i'll retrofit to the ol' blue monster in the spring.

i saw this head gasket for the g10 in a thread here at gmf and also while surfing on ebay. the seller, who is a metro guy, guarantees it not to blow. it has a metal support "spider" between the steel rings around the cylinder bores and with it in hand, it is the most robust head gasket i've acquired for the g10 engine. it's comparable in price to a fel-pro head gasket but, again, with it in hand it appears to be considerably more substantial. it's probably the next best thing to multiple layer steel (mls.) here's a link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&vxp=mtr&item=270890618622[/quote] i'll give it a run with around 16 pounds of boost using head studs cranked down to 60 ft/lbs and see if it lives up to the seller's "no blow" claim. ![]() |

i was puttering around today, it's too cold to spend much time outside, even in the garage, and i put together an adjustable fuel pressure regulator for the new engine. the secret parts come in a modification kit. you hack off the canister's top and the inlet tube and internal spring fly off and roll under the work bench. that exposes the regulator's diaphragm. the kit uses an o-ring which is too small to work so i replaced it with a big fat one from the collection in my coffee can. the main part locates over the end of the canister that gets chopped off, a backing flange seats on the other side of the canister and the two parts are joined by 4 cap screws. i used the fpr from a late model sohc 16v g13 which a nearly bolt on replacement for the stock turbo3 fpr. the only real difference is the length of the fuel return pipe. it fits great. i'm hoping to be able to bump up my fuel pressure just a little to be able to optimize my injector flow. my injector choice for this build was a 330cc/min fast response type from an acura. those should give me enough fuel to support 150 hp with a fast enough pintle response to be able to establish a smooth idle. also, the tips on these are designed to atomize fuel instead of squirting it. our little blond mail lady just about wore herself out hauling a big, heavy box up to my front door. the poor gal got to the door and went asshole over teacups, landing on her back. the box landed on top of her and nearly smashed her brains out. in the box i found that my friend, benefactor, and one of my partners in crime had shipped me a load of unobtainium in the form of a mk2 turbo3 block, crank, and piston assemblies. parts i'd never find here in the states, i'd rather have these than their weight in gold. this is a major step in moving the project forward. i'm happier than a kid on christmas morning! next stop, the machine shop to have them hot tank everything (barn fresh so there are several head bolt holes that have mud dauber wasp nests filling them. big props to my mystery benefactor!

Good on you Richard. Now you can start on a new stormer. Funny, I recently received a somewhat similar package albeit not as rare from a generous Santa. I wonder if the donors could be related??
