i've got to give props to the guys who made parts available for the new turbo3 bottom end. mike cove (suprf1y) at 3 tech performance provided the turbo3 block, crank, and rods. jess tremblay (jardamuth) at turbine tech provided the specially coated vitara pistons. chet (non-member) at columbus col-weld did the machine work and rotating assembly and performance dynamics did the rotating assembly zero balancing. |

i finally saved up enough of my lunch money to pay off the machining and balancing bills on the project engine. i've been pre-occupied with working on the red resto-rod vert, getting it operable as a daily driver while i prep the chassis to recieve the turbo3 rig. i finished with my weekend work on the car and it's sort of cold, damp, and miserable outside so i decided to work in the basement today. i unwrapped the turbo3 block and got things ready for some assembly work. the bottom end is as solid as it can be with the roatating assembly zero balanced, new main and rod bearings done to new tolerances, and 75mm vitara pistons on spec turbo3 rods. the oil pump and oil pickup installed, they sent the wrong pickup tube o-ring in the oil pump set but i had a new one in the fel-pro conversion set. the oil pan got gooped up with ultra-black rtv, just enough to not squeeze out of the gap but still seal properly. the bottom end is sealed up with the new stainless steel assembly hardware. the bores are beautiful and the piston fitment is perfect. the 17-4 alloy stainless steel head bolts are sweet. i think that they're worth every nickel i saved up to have them fabricated. i'm taking a break for a cup of coffee and a smoke before i jump back into the assembly. i'll have more pics up this evening. |

i'm using a no blow gasket from mark dvorak. it's a kick ass head gasket, probably the next best thing to mls. suprf1y sent me the crank gear i needed for the build to go with one of his last run of black aluminum under drive pulleys. the twincam crank gear deals with the 1" timing belt from the late model g10 and matches the width of the adjustable cam gear. the wider belt provides a more positive drive for the cam and the rounded teeth yield less parastitic drag and noise. geo glenn and scoobs brought me a 4 ribbed water pump pulley when they were up at easter so i had all the accessory pulleys that match the bigger belt. |

Less noise...I like that. I may have to get the wider/rounder pulleys. |

How did you go about installing your head studs, just finger tight? Care to PM a price on those and were to get them? |

i knocked all the points off the threads on my wire wheel and polished the threads on a cotton buffing wheel. then i waxed the threads before i installed them. they bottom out in the holes and i twisted them tight with my hands. i bought 2.4mm thick washers and turned their outside diameters down to fit the pockets on the head and will use flanged nuts that have been ground smooth on the bottom flats torqued to 59.4 ft lbs. those studs are made from 17-4 stainless alloy and are harder than grade 8 at 180,000 lbs tensile strength. i had them custom made and while the window was open i offered to order them for gmf members. only a couple guys took the deal and it looks like the window for ordering them has been closed. i also ordered the stainless engine assembly sets and even had custom, normally aspirated g10 exhaust manifold studs made for a couple of guys here. the head studs were expensive but they are the shiznits! you only see 4 of them on the outside of the head but they are right in front and on top. up close and personal, the stainless hardware is very slick. i just got fed up with the corrosive nature of the location in which i live. i spend the money on stainless hardware on all my projects now. there's nothing that frustrates me more than snapping rusty bolts off when i'm trying to work on my cars. while i have been building my resto-rod vert, the time i have spent drilling out broken bolts and re-tapping the holes has now translated into days of labor. plus it looks nice.
