Wow, very nice.. I have a 94 Geo Metro LSi / XFi . I'm still investigating engine type. However, I am researching upgrading to the G10T. A few basic questions: 1. Where did you purchase your G10T? 2. Can I use the same transmission and clutch from a LSi / XFi? 3. What upgrade path would you suggest? Thanks, JQ Cave Creek, AZ |

first, if you car is a bona fide xfi - leave it as it is and hot rod another model. there's enough interest in a true xfi that you would destry it's intrinsic value by modifying it. second, the car you seem to want to build will be something that is out of the ordinary. as far as purchasing a mk2 g10t engine there's only really one place to go and that's to canada. the g10t was a canadian market only power unit. the turbo3 as it was sold up north used a 4.10 gt hybrid transmission. it had the wider ring gear like the gt but used a standard forward cover (bell housing) without the additional lug the gt had. i run 4.39 transmissions on my builds. also, due to the higher output and higher torque the turbo3 used a flywheel and clutch from the g13 4 banger application - and it needs it! the stock turbo3 runs an output of twice the torque of a normally aspirated g10. to support the hp rating, the turbo3 shared it's fuel pump with the gt model and you definitely need to upgrade the base model's fuel pump to run the g10t. and as far as an upgrade path, i wouldn't recommend that you follow mine. i started out by building hybrid g10 engines, turbo3 bits bolted onto g10 blocks. i also bought my g10t parts where i could find them, piece by expensive piece shipped from canada. there are conflicting opinions as to whether or not the engine internals will support turbocharging. i have a history of broken pistons and bent connecting rods that say no. i have had some good experience with assembling g10t engines that make more power than a stocker and don't grenade because of my learning curve over about 12 years. i replied to your wanted thread because i do happen to have a fresh build of a g10t which i have recently decided to sell. i'm lazy and i haven't listed it on ebay yet, but one day i will and there won't be another one like it. the thing to gear up for is that turbo technology adds another layer of complexity to an internal combustion engine. i sort of started with turbo engines back in the 70s when saab popped out with their turbocharged triumph b motor in a saab 99 model. over the years i became friends with the designer of that car. we had a love/ hate relationship because i liked the turbo version of the 99 but i hated the fact that his thinking was that saab would be more efficient by building a single platform using engines of differing levels of tune on their performance cars. it killed my favorite saab model, the 97 or sonett. an example of the higher tech involved in building a high output turbo3 would be the pistons i used in my lil' black monster engine. those were 75 mm pistons from a vitara that kept my base compression low, allowing for more applied boost while still running pump gas (93 octane but still available at most gas stations.) the pistons have a ceramic coating applied to the tops of them to act as an ablative and teflon applied to the skirts to reduce bore friction. anyway, be sure that you get on the fast learning curve by reading all you can find about the technology and then make good choices applying that technology. i spent several years planning the build for my blue monster vert, 21 months collecting parts, and then 5 or 6 months building the car. it wasn't like i just went out to the garage one day and built the car. like building the lil' black monster g10t i have for sale, it took months to find just the right parts, connecting rods, pistons, head, turbine tech bits. it also took a considerable budget, the engine rebuild machining and balancing charges alone were over $1000.just to let you know what kind of cash you might drop, i have an embarrassing wad of cash in my blue monster vert. if i told you more than $10,000 i would be low by half not counting my time. i have 4 grand in the black engine. |

All of that magical knowledge and green stuff is why I sold all of the T3 stuff I imported from Canada. Although I do know which barn they are sitting in so to speak, if I ever wanted them back I don't think the buyer has done anything with them still. That black motor would be a super fun ride for someone who has the know how to put a good car together. |
