cris, after reading your post several times i don't get the "letting it hang off your bumper" comment.

as the muffler is twice as big as a stock muffler, and selected because it offers less than half the restriction of a stock muffler, it's a trick to stuff it in the same space.

i tucked it up as far as i could and it doesn't stick out at all, if anything it's shy of poking out by a inch.

turbo charged engines respond very differently to exhaust designs compared to normally aspirated engines. the goal is to move gas out of the way as fast as possible, with the very least restriction, and that's why the pipe diameter is twice the size on my exhaust. also, the muffler construction is way different and it's not uncommon for mufflers to be represented as a "turbo" muffler when they aren't sufficient for turbo use.

having lived with my turbo3 vert for several years, i know exactly what to expect with this fart can. i ran the same muffler, from the same source, with a 2" pipe on my mostly stock turbo3 system. i've also run a 2.25" diameter exhaust with the same type muffler on a turbo3 and a pretty wild twincam with excellent results in tone and performance.

this is just in the way of explaining that i don't run these fart cans so much for looks as tuning results. also, because i build my own exhaust systems and i'm intimately acquainted with these cars i know first hand what it takes to wedge a true performance system into them. your position of using a "real" muffler with a "real" tailpipe isn't truly possible without engineering yourself into a corner (like losing the center jacking point in the rear or creating flow problems with tight, crushed bends in the pipe.)
i am referring to looks not performance. i understand a turbo car has needs... im not opposed to the muffler itself, just the placement of it for everyone to see.....im a big fan of understatement. especially on a little 3 cyl metro.... just seeing that giant thing right below the bumper seems tacky to me. it reminds me of those honda boy racers i see on the road every day...... so what i wanted to suggest, since you are a good welder, was to somehow hide the muffler and add a humble little tail pipe to deliver the remaining exhaust fumes out from under the car...... im sure its not easy given its such a small car. but it should be possible.....maybe horizontal muffler placement if the bends are not too restrictive.... take a picture of the undercarriage and well figure it out together.

in fact, scratch that. what bothers me is not even the placement of the muffler. its that giant fake non functional 4 inch muffler tip. what makes it even worse is the tiny actual exhaust outlet within. it gives it a cheap riceburner look....but again. thats just my opinion.

if you look closer, it appears to be holding the muffler in place level so he can weld his brackets.

look, this is what i call clean:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYxVKCND18w

this guy boosted his classic audi to well over 500hp at all 4 wheels from a mere 2200cc 5cylinder. but he still managed to retain a near stock looking muffler and tail pipes. understatement at its finest.

edit: you can see a closeup of the tail pipes at 5minutes and 21 seconds.

Different strokes for different folks. Mine looks stock until you get under the car and see how the muffler is jammed in there.

Got 70 MPG?

T3's muffler will not be that visible when it's done. Step back and think for a second about the angle that he's taking that picture at. How many people are that short or looking at it from that angle in real life?

I should know this because I have a near identical muffler on mine in the same spot. Mine is painted flat black though, with the tip polished, but other that that and my tip is a slanted tip, it's the same $23 stainless steel muffler and I DO keep my baffle in as well to keep the sound down and bottom end torque up.

Are you planning on anything like power steering? When that front/wheel drive kicks it in the ass the wheel will probably spins right out of your hands.

Possibly a hydraulic stabilizer even.

Turbo3 and Twincam Tweaker

it was a short weekend for me and it rained today which kept the welder in the garage. i did get a bunch of small tasks and a lot of tidying up on the inside of the car. here's a shot of the wiring in the engine bay. even in split tubing, the wiring is busier than the stock turbo3.

i needed a place for the knocksense unit that would let me get the box out to tweak the potentiometer to calibrate the instrument. i left a lot of cabling on it. after i'm satisfied with the tuning, i'll shorten the wires up. the led that winks when knock is detected is ultra bright. i mounted it in the console door, out of my line of vision but very visible in the periphery of my vision.

here's a shot of the dash controls and interior. i've mounted the laptop support to a seat mounting bolt on the passenger's side. it's no surprise that everything is in view and within reach with the small cockpit. i can reach the radio controls, netbook, and the buttons on all the gauges from the driver's seat.

the gps transponder was a natural fit on the bolt access panel in the middle of the dash. i only had to file a small notch in the piece for the usb cable.

as soon as i get dry weather i'll finish that exhaust system. slow progress but progress none the less.
