Just yesterday i purchased a 1995 geo metro hatchback with a clean title, 200k on the odo. and a beautiful interior and decent exterior for 1500 bucks. and thus far, im in love. today it threw a 5-1 code for the egr so this weekend im going to start by cleaning out the egr valve, cleaning the throttle body, changing the oil, air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, and probably the cap and rotor. i think that should be a good start. i know its not getting nearly the gas milage it should be. im about 3/4ths of a tank down and close to 300 miles on it. i think it should be getting better. any helpful feedback, preventative maintenance tips etc. or help with the couple of issues i have is greatly appreciated! ALSO: is 1500 a fair price for a very clean geo with ice cold a/c? Thanks! Torey |

3/4 of 10 gallons, 7.5, 300/7.5 = 40 seems fine |

Welcome to your new forum, 1Liter.love! Like Coche Blanco says you may be getting 40 mpg. HOWEVER we have a couple of threads on how inaccurate the gas gauges are on most or our cars. You could be lucky but I would go 400 miles and fill up. Note where the needle is and after a few 400 mile tanks you will have a really good idea what your true gas mileage is and how far you can go on 10.5-11 gallons and where you feel comfortable letting the needle drop to before you panic and hit a gas station. For me "panic" is needle on the left edge of the red mark and I still only get 8 gallons in the car. If you haven't found it click on: Metro EGR System. You will want to not only clean the EGR but at least test the passages to and from it by running the engine for 10-15 seconds to see fi you get air flow out the intake manifold/EGR ports with the EGR removed. Otherwise the ports are clogged and will need to be cleaned out. Other issues like anger management, psychotic episodes or delusions of grandeur? The insecurity and sub-compact car social outcast feelings disappear when you fill-up at the pump and whine that it took only $30 while the SUV driver next to you fumes. Bragging about 50mpg at work helps also.

If it runs good and has a good body with no rust, 1500 is a good deal. That's what I paid for my 96 a year ago with the same mileage and it's been just fine. It's exceeded my expectations really and is now my all time favorite car and I've had quite a few. Edited by Sporty10, Jun 24 2011, 03:16 AM.

Awesome! thank you guys so much for the responses i have yet to have time to do anything to it yet. one other thing you guys might be able to help out with. The idle in the car seems to be too high based on the cheap and poorly previously installed tachometer. it seems to get a false reading and double every so often. but it tends to hover around 1200 to 1300 rpm and when the ac is on it drops to in and around 750. im thinking somebody adjusted the idle to compensate for a poorly maintained iacv? whats the opinion on that?ive been recommended seafoam twice thus far via vacuum induction to clean up the carbon desposits. whats peoples thoughts on running that through the system? and in terms of cleaning the fuel system, do you think some gumout is good what what? THANKS SO MUCH! |

Generally, high idle = vacuum leak. Might be a good idea to buy 10' of vacuum hose and replace all the hose according to the diagram on the sticker on the hood. Could be the Idle Adjust screw as you suggest. Click on: Idle Speed Set Screws, Idle Screw Adjust Post, and Idle Speed Control Motor Repair. A lot of us use Seafoam. I will run 5 oz as recommended but pour one ounce through the brake booster hose to help keep it clean. Opinions will vary of course. I've used Gumout also but with less apparent results. Here is Johnny Mullet's post: Seafoam Maintenance. |

Why do you say to run the engine for 10-15 seconds? Are you going to harm something by running it longer? What if you spray Seafoam or carb cleaner into the EGR ports while the engine is running and the EGR is removed? |

This HAS to be the car I drove 4.5 hours to buy, but the guy lied about, then STOLE my money. Sounds exactly like it. I'm betting a cookie it's green and has a dealer sticker on the hatch from Clarksville TN (if i remembered correctly). Oh how i'm getting more pissed off... how funny that he sells the car for $300 less than he said was the ABSOLUTE lowest he would go...(even funnier when you consider that he stole $300 from ME!!!) This isn't directed at you btw (new owner), i'm just VERY frustrated. I hope you enjoy the car and welcome to the Metro community. Edited by z34-5speed, Jun 26 2011, 06:25 AM.

Well, running it without the EGR, it would be blowing exhaust fumes out one port. Don't breathe them, it's a bad thing. That will reduce the back pressure on the valves a little - not so bad. You have also created avacuum leak so your engine will likely begin idling high and the ECM will cycle to compensate. You've just created an exhaust and a vacuum leak. You do already have the EGR code so that won't be anything new. And it's going to get hot so don't burn your fingers. So, maybe 10-15 seconds is a bit short but there is no reason to go longer IMHO, you just want to know if the passages are clear. You are welcome to go longer if you wish. Believe me... I could be totally wrong. You may want to spray something in the intake port but, again, it will be getting hot and you will be breathing exhaust fumes. Spraying in the intake port might be good unless what is cleaned out is solid and goes into the intake manifold and into the cylinders.. Beware of any spray being blown back in your face. When I did it the engine started running rough. You are better off cleaning the EGR and it's ports when the engine is cold or warm. If the exhaust passage is clogged, then The spray will only affect maybe the first 1/2" of the impacted carbon. You will need to scrape it out. Personally, I would want to remove the exhaust manifold so the carbon does not drop down the exhaust if I needed to clean the exhaust passage. |
