Hi Guys- New to the group and have not owned a metro yet. I currently drive a 98 Suzuki Esteem that gets about 37 mpg and before that, had a 97 Geo Tracker. I'm trying to decide which year and model to go for. I've read that the 89- 94 metros are lighter, have less emission stuff and get better mileage as a result. I do like the body style of the later years though so I'm torn. I'd really like to try and hit the high 40, 50 mpg mark. What do you think of this one: http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/cto/2459173057.html only thing I don't like is that it's an auto. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Vince in Shelton, WA, close to Olympia, OK not to far from Seattle if you don't know where those 2 are! |

Check out the Project forum and look for my topic, Ive been working on restoring my 1994 Geo Metro, If you were to get one, try and find a 2 door with a 5 speed, i got 4 with auto transmissions, but its all i could find. I have a 4 door 1993 metro, that im not driving yet, since it needs a motor rebuilt, but thats coming right up after i finish my blue metro. The day after i get it legal, im moving the 4 door into the garage to start on it. |

Ya Steve- looks like you're up to your elbows in projects. So you like the 2 door 5 speeds- how about year? Pre or post 95 or does it matter? |

sounds nice, price is a bit high for my tastes, and no pictures, but it sounds like its worth a look over, if it looks pretty good maybe throw him an offer of 1000, if he dont bit try 1200, Only if you like it and it drives out good. |

It doesn't really matter on the year, however, if comfort and "safety" is important to you then you'd opt for a '95+ style. The '89-'94s do get a little better mpgs, but not by much. In order of mpgs, the '89-'94 Metro XFi is the best option, but you will pay more for them. You can easily achieve XFi mpgs with a few modifications to a normal Metro though. Next are the 3 cylinder/5 speeds and then 4 cylinder/5 speeds. I wouldn't waste your money on an automatic, but that's just my opinion. Most sellers jack up their prices just because it's a Metro and "they get good as mileage". The automatics get 10 mpg less than the 5 speeds. If you can't find a 5 speed, keep searching. mjspiess- hey thanks- I'll definitely wait for a 5 speed then. I knew there was a dif but that's more than I thought it would be. |

Yep, if you want high MPG forget the auto. Oh.... and I know where shelton is. Welcome fellow washingtonian. If your looking at 95 and up cars, stick with the 3 cylinders if you want high mileage. Personally, I prefer the 89-94s cause they are lighter handle better, and are easier to diagnose and work on. Plus I really am not a fan of the egg shaped style of the 95 and ups. Thats a personal taste thing though. On the plus side, the 95 plus cars tend to lend themselves to aero modding a little better than the pre 95s.

Hey do you guys know of Geo Jeff up in Arlington WA? Sounds like redoing these is his main gig. Sells them for 3500 a piece after everything's been done. |

Welcome to the forum Vincemorson!! ![]() I personally prefer the 89-94 shape. Looks better than the "mouse" shape IMO... but thats just me. Body and interior parts from the 89-94 is a direct swap with its cousin the Swift (Swift GT in the USDM). For instance I swapped a Swift hood and glass headlights to my 91. I do hope you find a nice Metro and start hitting some nice MPG figures ... they are simple little cars, easy to work on and very light. All the best

Welcome to the forum, vincemorson ![]() The earlier models are lighter and (even without mods) do get better gas mileage. Mjspeiss's is a good example of a newer model with many mods = great gas mileage. I pay extra insurance per month on my earlier model, because it doesn't have airbags and is considered not as safe. There is a lot to consider, eh? ![]() Let us know what you get. |

good post Jittney--agree will all you say--however my insurance must be cheaper than yours---('91 vert has air bags) Welcome Vince---Since I am extremely pleased with my 91, I would recommend an 89-93 convertable LSI with 5 speed manual trans my mileage is always around 48-52 in town or on the Freeway--45 MPH to 65 MPH
