New Brakes; Replacing the brakes

Hello forum, I just purchased my first car, it is a 1993 2 door hatch back and i have noticed that the brakes feel very worn, it takes a lot longer to stop than I would like. So I am planning on replacing them but as this is my first car I have limited experience and would like some advice. What are all the parts I need? A about how long will it take to make the repairs?

You may want to just jack the front end up, put it on jack stands, pull the wheels and inspect the brake rotor for wear and the thickness of the brake pads.*

Click on '95+ Front Brake job. Where Johnny Mullet says compress the caliper - I use a 6" c-clamp and have opened the brake fluid reservoir cap a little. Basic tools will be a jack, jack stands, metric socket set/ratchet, bungie cord/coat hanger for holding the caliper out of the way. I like to keep a click type torque wrench handy for things like torquing the wheel nuts to 45 foot pounds. You can get OK quality but inexpensive tools at Harbor Freight (http://www.harborfreighttools.com/).

*However let me introduce you to Seafoam... click on Seafoam Maintenance. Because you may have some clogging in the vacuum line from the intake manifold to the brake booster. You will know if you have good vacuum if you pull the hose with the engine running. You can buy some Seafoam and do the maintenance BUT pull the hose off the brake booster (firewall in front of the driver) and pour a little (1-2 oz) Seafoam into the hose. Make sure your brake fluid is at the correct level on the reservoir.

Hey GeneralGeo did you ever find the help you want on the brakes? I too have a "new" 93 2dr and need to do brakes and have been searching all over this forum and Teamswift. There is a great pictorial step by step on this forum but. . . the pics are all deleted. I emailed the guy to see if he still had them and got no reply. I am about the same skill level as you so I want to know exactly what I'm getting into before I get the car pulled apart. I've found a bunch of posts like that on here and what I do know is that 1) you need a slide hammer and 2) most people seem to upgrade to the 1995 and newer brakes. I'm really not into doing that, I just want to replace the rotors and pads and probably adjust the rears. I'm waiting on my ebay manual ($28 for factory service manual, $5 for Haynes) I bought both - couldn't pass up $5 and bought it on Amazon with free 2day shipping. Abe Books had some good prices too.

Helter Skelter taught me a good trick with the booster line. Just stick the line in a cup (spray paint can lid) filled with only about 6 oz. of Seafoam with engine idling. It does the trick FAST. Wait an hour or two, then start it and pour more down the carb till she dies, let her sit anothe couple of hours and then start her and let her choke cough and come back to life. Then run her through her gears on the open road. If you have neighbors, they will think you are a mosquito fogger. Works great though.
