To many cars!
[ * * ]
Picked up my 94 metro today.
I BUGGED and BUGGED the guy with notes in till he finally decided to give me a ring. Turns out it doesn't move because of a blown head gasket. Im thinking NO biggie. Drove it home for 500.00
So me and a friend oodled at the little "G10" as its called around here and got the head off. Looks decent but from Pre purchase reading around the forum I decided I didn't want to spend a ton of cash on a high mileage no maintenance car. This one is just right so I can re-condition the Head with SS valves and clean up the egr intake/exhaust ports and get it running efficiently.
These are my goals.
Im after: Efficient running, Not horsepower or "hyper-miling", just a good running little metro.
I would like to see 35-45 MPG
I hope I can get the SS valves intake and exhaust from Parts Dino'
mill the head a little bit for a slight compression bump ( I LOVE 91 octane) really though.

Love the car allready and Cant wait to pick up a little here and there from senior members.
thanks again, please leave me some feedback about my plans and hopefully some links and pointers in the right direction
:cheers

Sir, yes sir!

Unless you got an automatic, 45MPG will be the lowest you ever get.

Welcome! :thumb

I have acquired the manual Transmission,
one thing I would like cleared up is the bolt pattern on this car is 4x114.3 on all metros, and the swifts have the 4x100 correct?

Both Metro and Swift 89-01 share the 4x114.3 bolt pattern.

Well now let's not be final on that. 45 is if he's doing 55 consistently on the frwy , but lets face it....I'm from L.A. and the speed limit is 65 but since no one does that it's more like 70-75mph. I'd say that 38-40 is realistic ^o)

If you say so, but driving my 2000 4cyl 5 speed combined city/highway gives 42MPG consistently. An earlier model with a 3cyl should get better than mine.

Last tank was 44MPG.

Welcome to your new forum, tree18is! :coffee

You are on the right track. Might want to check out Head Gasket Warning, Metro EGR System, and our FAQ page. And Timing Mark Pictures.

That and don't loose the check valve in the block. :deal

3Tech has some re-usable head bolts. http://geometroforum.com/pages/3Tech

Please do share on your secret on how you are getting 10 miles more of combined driving when the goverment http://www.fueleconomy.gov/FEG/bymake/Chevrolet2000.shtml rated your car at 34 combined...Are you drafting , coasting and shutting off at the stop lights?
you are getting better mpg than my 99 3cyl 5sp http://www.fueleconomy.gov/FEG/bymodel/1999_Chevrolet_Metro.shtml.

seriously I would like to know i'm not tring to be a D__K

The government can bite me, they're wrong 90% of the time, and I'm not just talking about fuel mileage, that's a universal statement.

My 98 4/5 has gotten 40 mpg for 155K miles now with no special driving techniques whatsoever, had a 2000 3/5 which did the same for the 70K that I owned it. I also had two 3/5's in the new body style, got 43 mpg from both of them.

They may be wrong and I don't doubt you, but what they have on that website is about what I get. I get an average of 37-39 mpg when I'm driving 70-75 mph. If I'm in traffic and I can't go fast then I average 41-44 mpg because I'm driving anywhere from 25-65mph. The faster you go the less your MPG. That fact has been touched upon before in this forum (I just can't reference the exact post right now)
BOG am I smoking or am I right; doesn't speed kill the MPG on these 3Cyl last body style models because they weigh more than the old bodies.

OMG, driving at that insane speed is whole other topic. Doesn't much matter how much mileage you're getting, engine won't last long at that speed.
