Hi, I just changed the CV axle on my 2001 chevy metro, while I was changing i decide to change the seal too, the one the goes on the transmission house, right where you put the axle, after i put it back and mount all parts togheter, I went for a ride and after parking on the drive way i saw transmission fluid on the floor, I knew was the seal , I checked and it was leaking from there. So far i replaced 3 times ( every time a new seal), AND IT STILL LEAKING. I think i put it to far back, maybe i crushed the seal a little be , i used a PVC pipe to push it, and pushed it by hand all way to the end. My question is ? How far should this seal goes? Any body get pictures on how to properly put this seal. When to stop pushing it? I'll be waiting on answers. Thank You. Edited by mrcansian, Jul 28 2011, 02:13 AM.

The seal should be flush with the transmission case. The best way to install a seal is with a tool like this, http://www.belknaptools.com/special.asp?itemno=17&pageno=1 Check your cv axle shaft for cuts or burrs and clean the mating surface where it mates the seal. Take your time and drive the seal straight. Before you install the seal into the transmission, slip it on your cv axle and see if it is a snug fit on the cv axle where it rides. You might be getting the wrong seal as well. Also when you install it into the transmission put a little thin coat of silicone around the outter metal part of the seal that touches the transmission case. Welcome to the forum. . |

Is you car an auto or standard trans car? Also what direction is the spring inside the seal facing when you install it in your case? The spring always goes towards the oil. Welcome to the forum. So the spring will be inside with the oil. |

Hi, the ENGINEDOCTORGEO was right on his post, for some reason i was getting the wrong seal . My car is the 2001 chevy metro, automatic 3 speed transmission. First I got on Advanced Auto Parts the National brand seal part # 223830, and after i detected the leak and reading the post I got the CV Axle out again and checked if the seal was fitting right, it was not fitting right and it had a little gap in the inner part of the seal, between the axle and the seal. I went to AUTOZONE and got the TIMKEN brand seal part # 223540 and it fit exact right. The TIMKEN brand is much better quality, you can see the difference . Thanks for the help. |

I've got the same problem with the the left cv joint, I've got a leakage. We've found that the seal was "herniated" and the fluid was leaking (after years of good use.) Will the part fit (Timken 223540) fit the 1997 Geo Metro? I was thinking pulling CV Axle, taking out seal, draining oil, replace seal, replace oil. Right? |

If your 97 is a five speed it will not fit. The 5 speed ones are hard to find. |
