Greetings....so after several months of pondering and research I chose to purchase a 1990 HFi with 126xx miles. I'm assuming it's 212,6xx cause it's hard to believe that it only has 112,6xx. Although, overall the paint is in excellent condition and the interior is not trashed, so it's conceivable that it does only have 112,6xx. Either way, I endeavor to get the mpg up beyond the 40.8 mpg that the first tankful rendered on 87 octane. My current tank is 92 Chevron.

The previous owner recently replaced the radiator but he suggested I change the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and O2 sensor. Hopefully, doing that will boost the mpg to 43/44.

I welcome other suggestions and will browse the site to pick up other tips for increasing mpg.....

Welcome aboard and congratulations on your XFI purchase. The place to start is with a compression test, that will give the best picture of overall engine health. Good Luck!

air up the tires
MPGuino to help you improve your driving habits for better mpgs.
drive with a feather-foot (tough to do on LA freeways, without getting run over).

From everything I've read, your XFi should easily return >50mpg if you drive easy and keep your top speed under 60mph.

Welcome aboard. Great bunch of folks here, me included, lol. Congrats on the find. My 94 XFI is pretty consistent at 56 mpg during the summer. Drops off during the winter tho, usually 46-48. Follow the excellant advice here & you'll be max mpg-ing too.

And forget the "high test" gas, it's going to hurt mileage, not help. Your car wants regular.

And that's an XFI, there's no such thing as an HFI unless the dealer just had some stickers made. That used to happen, I've seen "Sport" and "GT" stickers on a Metro before.

Don't worry about the hfi my 1990 Metro has a crome limited addition sticker on both sides and on the back. I see you are in Torrance. I bought my first car in Torrance . A 1968 Austin Heally MK3. Wish I still had that car :(

Thanks for all the well wished guys. I have noticed on my Garmin GPS "ecoroute" option, which is sort of a "live" mpg, that the mpg starts going up around 44 when I'm doing 50-55mph, so clearly, staying below 55mph pays off.

So, fueling up with 92 octane isn't necessarily better for overall efficiency and cleaning accumulated deposits, etc? The 87 octane is sufficient?

Will post a photo as soon as time permits.

92 octane is worse in every aspect than 87 octane. It is designed for high performance engines that need the gas to not light off as easily and not burn quite as fast.

Welcome to your new forum, 1990HFi! :coffee

"overall efficiency and cleaning accumulated deposits," is probably going to accomplished with the detergents and additives in gas and not the octane as Woodie :coffee says.

If you can find non-ethanol 87 octane it would be better but I don't see any in California at; http://pure-gas.org/index.jsp?stateprov=CA. In which case if you want a "certified" gas you can look at www.toptiergas.com/ for companies who reportedly have higher standards. That Internet site was last updated in June, 2011. None of those companies, in my area, carry non-ethanol so I add a little Seafoam or JB products to the tank on occasion. It works for moi.

Good stuff to know. Thank you gentlemen.

Just before starting my XFi, when I turn the key 1/4 turn, there's a loudish hum towards the rear of the car around the hatch area. A local mechanic said the fuel pump is located there. The hum continues no matter what gear I'm in, until my driving is done at which time, I turn the ignition off. Is that indeed the fuel pump of possibly some aftermarket gadget installed by the previous owner. The sound is similar to the hum you hear on car stereo speakers when you drive under electrical power lines......it's not the car speakers cause the sound is there even when the radio is off...any clues?

Yes, that's the fuel pump. The pump shouldn't be so loud that it's easily heard when driving. If it is louder than it should be, it could be a sign that the fuel pump is going out.

Thanks again all. I'm prepared to put in about $500 in the above mentioned replacements including the fuel pump. I report on milage increase after repairs are done.
