Rear suspension positioned

I didn’t have much time to work on the car today but I managed to get the second strut tower located and spot welded in place. This at least let me move the furring strips and ratchet straps and get some good pictures of how the rear looks.

I am not real happy with the lower control arms and am thinking of moving them. Now that it is all located in place I will need to check square on the car before doing anything. If it is all square I will probably move the lower control arm mounts forward and try and get them at a 45 degree angle to the axle. I will have to cut and modify the old frame a good bit to get that kind of an angle but I think it will be worth it. If that doesn't work I will flip them side to side and let them sit parallel to the axles like the stock front suspension is on the car originally. That doesn’t seem ideal for the rear suspension but it will work if nothing else is right.

I really need to get the motor mounts and get the motor location sorted out. That will probably give me a better idea of what kind of angle would be ideal for the control arms. I need to use a more complete motor and a set of axles so I can see how it is going to look fully assembled and get it all positioned correctly and then decide what I am going to do to the control arms.

If anyone has a flat garage or somewhere flat to park their car could you get a level and check the valve cover and see if it is flat on top or angled a bit forward. I think it was angled slightly forward but I can't remember and forgot to check that before I started taking my car apart.

Redoing the rear suspension

I didn't like the setup the way it was so I cut it off the car and started to redo it. Now the control arms sit at a 40 degree angle. That looks much better and should make it ride about right. One side is on and located properly. The right side still needs redone and I will do that next. I have a few extra things welded on to hold it all square until I get the frame fully built. But once I get the motor located in the right place I can fully weld up the frame and get it braced up properly.

I also got new control arms so I have tight ball joints and new bushings to help make it ride better. I like the gray color I painted them and will paint the whole chassis that color once I get done with building it.

Rear suspension welded in place

The new setup on the rear end was much better, so I mounted the other side in place and checked square on the car. Everything is right on square this time and nothing is more than 1/8 inch off anywhere. So I am happy with how it looks now.

With the suspension in place it was time to put a better motor and transmission in place and get them lined up. The motor mounts hit the diagonal braces so I will have to cut them off and put them somewhere else. But for the most part the motor will fit in there just fine. Since it all looks like it will fit good I started welding up the suspension better. I put on the braces that will be part of the final frame.

The motor is not mounted so it might be bumped a bit from square. But it was mostly just a placeholder so I knew where everything was going to sit. The lower control arms are mounted. Next I will be building the main tube that runs to the back for the trunk to mount to. Then I will make the engine mounts. After that it is just a matter of bracing it all up strong and it is done.

Starting rear subframe

With the suspension looking good and in place it is time to actually build a rear frame for the car. I had to put the trunk back on for the next part. With the trunk on I had to put the car in the air far enough to get under it and measure and fit the main tube. The main tube runs straight back and will have bracing to all the other parts of the car. I was not able to find a position for it that cleared both the engine mount and the transmission mount. I will have to build a new transmission mount to get it located somewhere else. That should not be that much of an issue really. I might be able to just flip it over or something to get it to clear. I will figure that out later.

Next up is to put the spare motor back in the car and get motor mounts located. Then I can build the final strut tower brackets and all the main points will be located on the chassis. Then a bit of bracing and it is time to strip everything out of the back of the car to clean and paint the frame.

2 of 3 motor mounts built

Didn't have a lot of time to work on the car but I managed to get it on the ground, get the trunk lid off, and get the motor and transmission located properly. After that I made the motor mount and rear mount. I still have to make a custom mount for the front transmission mounting bracket. The stock one does not fit in the frame. After I get the motor mounts all finished I just have to build the proper strut tower mounts and the rear frame is done except for welding it all up and adding some braces.
