...On a side note I figured out how to route the video from my security cameras to justin.tv so it would be possible to broadcast video of when I am working in the garage. I can't think of anything more boring than watching me stare at a car and occasionally do some work, but I might have to try broadcasting sometime.
It worked great for RobotsAteMyArms, especially if there is feedback for the peanut gallery! :type

New rims and tires

I haven’t had time to work on the car much but I did manage to put the rear struts back on the car. The new wheels and tires came in so I figured it was a good time to put them on and roll it out and get some pictures. It looks like it has a lift kit on it right now since there is nothing in the car except a bare frame and body. Once everything is in it the car will sit much lower.

I probably won’t have time to work on it for a few days but when I get back to it I plan on cutting off the front suspension and redoing it. After that the frame is done and it is time to start putting the car together. The Astro needs a bit of work done to it right now. I have to fix the radiator and put an upgraded water pump on it. While it is in the garage I figured I might as well mount the turbo. So it will probably be sometime next week before I can do much to this car.

Modification to the rear track

So the car has sat in the driveway for a week with the tires and wheels on it. After staring at it for a while I decided the rear tires being equal width to the front is not right for the car. So I unbolted the wheels and slid them out wider until I found a place that looked like it was right. So I ended up with 60 inches hub to hub on the front end and 65 inches rear. The wheels are 8 inches wide and a 5 inch backspace. That means the total width from the outer edge of the rims is 66 inches wide front and 71 inches wide rear.

With that decided it was time to resquare the frame to the floor. Instead of putting marks on the concrete, I am going to try laying down a large box to mark on instead. It seems much easier to do it this way. I have it laid out and ready to cut the suspension arms and strut towers free and move them out a few inches.

When I built the convertible frame it was much easier since everything was already located in the proper place. This building frames from scratch stuff takes forever. I should be done with the rear frame tomorrow I hope if the temperature is not so horrible. This heat wave has really slowed me down a lot. It is hard to work in a garage that is around 125 degrees. Plus the last week having no internet and random power outages from the storms didn't help me much either.

But it looks like I will be easily able to get a mostly assembled car to Geopalooza. It probably won't be complete enough to drive but it will have all the main components installed. Maybe that will tempt a few more people to make the drive and hang out with all of us there in Aug. :)

Last night a transformer on the mountain above the house exploded so no power again today. Kind of hard to weld on the car without it. So it looks like another day with probably nothing accomplished on the car :(

whats your plan for headlights on this beast? Dual or quad projector beams would looks killer :D maybe chrome the housings somehow, and then do projector beams to make it that clean look? LED's? or 4x6 halogens :/

Going to put 5 3/4 round headlights in the top that will be high and low beams. On the bottom I have a set of 4 1/2 inch round driving lights. The housings and stuff inside will be flat black. The lexan covers that go over it will be slightly tinted. I don't want to make it real dark I need to keep it 50 state legal so I can drive it everywhere. I have all the parts for the lights and I will probably mount them up as soon as the frame welding is done.

The power company is working on the lines now so I might have power back in my garage soon. I might manage to get something done on the car today after all. :)

Drivers side rear lower suspension moved

Today the power was out most of the day and it was really hot in the garage so I didn’t get much accomplished. I have the positions laid out on the floor for where everything goes so I cut one side free and positioned it in the new location. I spot welded the lower suspension in place enough to hold it. I will finish bracing it next then position the strut tower. I need to move each side 2.5 inches so in the pictures you can see how much that is.

Rear suspension located in place

With the marks on the floor it was pretty easy to just cut the rest of the suspension free and move it out to the new position. I mostly have it spot welded in place with whatever tubing I had laying around. I will test fit the tires on it this time before welding it all up solid with good mounts. Overall it looks like it will sit much better with the wheels out to the edge of the wheel wells.

Next up I will stick the wheels on and the trunk lid to make sure it looks right. Then I will cut new bracing and get rid of the mess holding it together now and weld it all up solid. This should be the last time I have to change the rear end. I will soon be able to start on the front end and hopefully it will go much easier than the back.

Rear mostly complete

Last time I welded up the entire rear end solid before test fitting it to make sure everything looked just right. This time I learned my lesson and while it was just spot welded in place I put the trunk lid and tires on it and lowered it to the ground as much as the spot welds could take then made sure it was all good. The front tire is not attached it is just sitting in the fender well so it is maybe a half inch farther out than it will be when bolted on as well as not centered in the opening. The rear is in the right position and it looks much better where it is at. The car is still a lot higher off the ground than it will eventually be.

After it was test fit and looked good. I started to properly build the rear frame back. It was much easier this time. Mostly because the main frame bar is already in place and solid. I have it welded good enough to hold it solid and I still need a few braces to finish it. I will finish it up completely tomorrow. Then I can finally start on the front end and get it put together as good as the rear end.

Cool, too busy myself to watch, but cool nonetheless.
