temp needle shakes after clutch work.

My clutch went out 300 miles from home. Just drove back and got it from the shop in that town. Now my temp needle shakes, idle is high and I got shitty MPG all the way home. Any ideas? It also surges and revs when I'm slowing down. Edit: the needle doesn't really shake anymore. But it runs like shit. Acts like the pcv valve is out. But its brand new, from the GM dealership in fact 4 months ago.

Really sorry your clutch went out.
I take it you got the clutch replaced there?
What else did they do?

My guess is the coolant level is low.

If you have the 3 cylinder, they may have disconnected the hose to the coolant pipe and allowed some coolant to leak out and it could also be possible that you have an air bubble in the coolant system.

Check the wire on the thermostat housing and check the ground wires on the back of the intake manifold and check the battery cables.

If the top 2 things don't solve the problem, have someone sit in the car and watch the gauge while the engine is idling...gently move some wires around to see if you have a short.

Maybe air in the system as well? Top off all your coolant, take the radiator cap off, and let the car run for awhile. When the fan kicks on, it'll burp some air out of the system, as well as a little coolant most likely.

Have you checked the vacuum line to the MAP sensor?
I had a place replace the clutch on the '96 a few years ago. It ran like crap. All the symptoms you describe.
When I called the shop, the jerk had the gall to tell me my car is a piece of junk.
I took it to them the next day. He continued to say the car was junk and they did nothing wrong. The mechanic that did the work came over, he was looking under the hood and found the problem. The vacuum line to the MAP sensor was hooked up to a wrong place. The moment he put it on the MAP sensor it ran like a dream.

I'd guess the temp sensor is partially connected or coolant level is too low (sensor not covered by coolant, or intermittent electrical contact at a connector), causing the ECU to recieve a signal that the engine is not fully warm, and to remain in cold start 'fuel enrichment' mode. I think our cars fuel enrichment mode includes slightly higher idle.

But that's just my guess...

Didn't fix it. Can't find anything not hooked up. Its not just high idle, it surges.

Last time a car of mine surged like that it was a loose ground.

Another symptom is that when I turn the car off it takes longer and its really rough. Its more like the car dying than turning off.c
