1996 Metro on craigslist

this is about 150 miles away from me.

Right now I have a 2000 LSI Automatic that is pretty much my wife's car now.

I've been driving a 91 sentra that I love 'cause it's so fast... but It keeps coming up with problem after problem and it really is a junker
I'm selling it for $600 and was going to buy a Sentra SE-R, 200SX or Infiniti G20

Just can't find one I like in my price range, and all Metros near me are like 2-4k as well... except this one.

230k on the "body" 70k on the engine.

Whatta ya'll think?

If the chassis and interior is clean it can be fixed. I worry about who fixed the engine and if it can go more than 50K after the rebuild. So 70K is risky (unless it was done correctly). My 94 gave me 230K miles prior to the transmission losing 5th gear.
I just purchased a 98 with 73K miles for 800. I figure if you look around you will find what your looking for. I also think that in one year 1 liter cars will hit the market again, which should make these prices drop.

Actually, the ad says engine was replaced 70k, not that it is either new nor rebuilt.

As always, I'd recommend giving it a THOROUGH going over, possibly bringing along a mechanic you trust if your not comfortable with testing things, and definitely throw in the compression testing kit and verify the front frame horns and rear wheel wells and floor boards are all still there and intact for that price.

Hmmm Didn't notice some of that wording...

you guys should see all the other metros near me though. Like I said 2-4k for anything from a 90-2000 metro and all autos with alteast like 80k on them

I really want a manual in my car, I won't settle for anything less!

Check the roof near the hatch for rust, that's where I found rust on mine. ):
Also check the radiator support, if there isn't rust there, or on the A arms, JUMP ON IT!!!

I guess the question is how mechanically inclined you feel you are?

This one for 650. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/cto/2531604761.html with the tranny problem looks like a good starter project ( that doesn't mean you don't still go over it with a fine tooth comb, though ). If the tranny is truly the only big problem, that is a steal since another tranny is easily obtained and many here have put them in as a first major mechanical exercise.

If your not really mechanical, check out the third one on that list, if it *is* as its represented, 1500 would be a good deal for it. If your not sure you could find the parts for fixing car a.), buy both a.) and b.) and for the price you would have spent on c.) you will have a pretty good rolling vehicle.

As for how it can feel if your not sure what your getting into, take a look at erinh0525's feelings after scoring a fairly nice convertible. Experiences like that, where you get overwhelmed can leave you aggravated and frustrated, where as to someone else it would be a walk in the park. I'd love to have scored that car, and if I were closer to him I would have grabbed it from him myself, alas, neither is the case.

Good luck though :thumb

Finding rust in any location isn't necessarily a deal killer, btw. Just make sure you properly assess its extent, and know whether you can fix it or if your going to have to farm it out. For instance, on my car, I knew the frame horns were going to go. One of them (drivers side ) was pretty much gone already, and even though the passenger side was looking solid, I could see the signs were already there.

Since I don't have a welder, I made the guy weld the driver side as a part of the sale. 1.5 years later I am looking at the passenger side now, and have gotten prices ranging from 125. -> 275. since I still do not have the time to do it myself. 275 is cheaper than getting another car, and I know this one mechanically intimately now, so even at the high end its worth doing.

For anything less structural (hatch area) I would have the time but still not the equipment to weld it, but I could fix it in other ways. All of these are things to keep in mind, be honest in assessing both your ability and your tolerance for lack of perfection if your doing something in a different than prescribed manner.

I live in CA So I have never worried about rust D:

Also, I am not in the least mechanically inclined... I was hoping to find a solid metro - older one for 600-1000 newer for 13-1500

i got mine for 1400 it had 78k original miles. it was a 2000

Automatic tho :(

Offer him a grand. He may bite if you show up and wave 10 Bennies in his face. Otherwise, if the frame is solid, which I suspect it is in your neck of the woods, it's a great investment. Depending on how long your commute is each day/week, you could have it paid off in gas savings pretty quickly, even at $1300.

Also make sure it come with a smog cert. Its the sellers responsibility to provide one in CA. And make sure it has currnet plates. If it does not and they did not get a non op on it. The great state of will make you pay the back fee's. And that can add up real fast. But it does look like a fairly clean Metro

I've been out to CA a few times, and have seen plenty of cars that were indeed rusted. For the few seconds it takes to look, I would make sure. Especially on these cars.

Yea, I agree. Bring cash and make an offer in person after a thorough look. Too many tire kickers could be wasting his time and cash will get his attention.

I showed up at a guy's house with my van and tow dolly in freezing winter weather to "look" at his 95 Metro he was selling for $1200. I walked around that car for 45 minutes, just talking and pointing things out. Long story short I got it for $300 and towed it home.
