I want to take my car on a few lengthy trips before summer winds down, but it is currently leaking oil through the crank seal(probably) and onto the timing belt...is this ok in small quantities or is it a recipe for disaster(I know it's a non interference engine, but side of the road timing belt changes suck). I've checked all the fluids, but what else should I have with me when i go in case i need to do some fixes on the road? This car has been great thus far with a few successful trips down four-wheeler trails and other places normal cars won't fit, happy Geo adventures all...

small toolbox kitted for your metro. Everything metric. 1/2 socket with a8,10,12/13,14 size sockets. Small extension, and medium extension. Cresent wrench, Vise grips. electrical tape. A flashlight with good batteries. A few quick connects(electrical connectors). Wire stripper, and crimper. Small amount of baking soda that will fit in a film cannister. A length of 10 gage wire about 3 feet long( you never know when you will need it) A set of wrenches in the same afore mentioned socket sizes. Two phillips screwdrivers, one stubby, the other about 8-10 inches. A flat tip relatively short, 4-6 inches, and heavy long one for prying. A handful of zip ties, a pocket knife, some wd-40. An extra key that someone other than you carries, or a hide a key on your car. A few quarts of oil for long road trips, a gallon on water- maybe for you, maybe for your car, so make sure its potable. thats about what I take on roadtrips. |

That's a great list, i have nearly all that, including the water for me or the car i always thought that was a good idea, but what is the baking soda for? I also just put a key under the car just in case. I'm most worried about the timing belt oil issue, everything else seems good to go... |

The oil shouldn't cause any problems besides of course, losing oil. Just keep a close eye on the fluid levels and top it off as needed. |

I cut a peep-hole out of the timing belt cover and it looks ok, can anyone else think of anything I will need before I take off on a 2000 mile jaunt? Also* -is the temp gauge accurate in these things? Should I put a thermostat in or leave it alone...? Edited by thatguy383, Aug 15 2011, 12:50 PM.

In case you break down in the hood and you need to cook up a quick batch of crack to impress the locals. You've already got water, a piece of wire, and a lighter, right? Just dart into a drugstore and buy a cigar, you can cook in the tube and your significant other can transform the cigar into a blunt so everyone can get baked while you're cooking up the rock. |
