I recently got a laptop for my truck driving experience and have found that the mobile WiFi networks out there are very lacking to say the least. I am mildly tech savvy but am looking for info on possibly an antenna for the WiFi. no programming or anything like that simply plug and play usb mobile WiFi amplification antenna type deal. Something I can carry with my laptop and plug in to get a better WiFi signal. And reasonable priced also. I have pulled out the laptop many times only to find no WiFi signal. Very frustrating to say the least. I can get WiFi with my ATT account but that is a extra monthly fee. Any help or advice appreciated. |

Realy the only place youll find a wifi signal is more than likely near a private owners home with an unsecured network, or at a truck stop that supplies wifi, and even then youll be in the same boat, yea granted a signal booster will help in some aspects, but if theres no wifi around you, then it will do absolutely no good. My laptop im on right now, i can pick up a signal thats still usable even 100 yards away from my house, i can go across my apartment complex here and still pick up my home signal with 2 bars left. It all depends on the signal quality of the place your trying to pick up a signal from, Now if you just driving and trying to do that forget it, not gonna happen.Id suggest just buying a mobile broadband networking card if thats what your planning. Altho they are pricey. Not for teh cards itself but for the service, as like any cell phone company |

sfiend1, I'm not endorsing this wi-fi antenna but they claim it can pick up wi-fi networks as far as a mile away, under the right conditions. Said they were able to pick up 25 networks with it in an area where they could only pick up 6 without it. Kinda pricey at $110, but if it works......? http://www.ccrane.com/antennas/wifi-antennas/super-usb-wifi-antenna-3.aspx |

Something like that would be a good investment if it really worked. It's very frustrating to pull over for the night pull out the laptop only to find the only WiFi around is petro's wireless for 3.99/hour. And I think it was 130$ ish for a year of WiFi service thru petro. I find myself stopping there most. |
