Thoughts on this Metro

I found another Metro around me that has a for sale sign on it and I wanted to ask your all's opinion on it. It is a 1997, red 2 door hatchback with a 5 speed, I'm fairly sure it's a 3 cylinder but it wasn't listed on the sign. It has rust holes in the rockers and the hatch is bashed up pretty bad but it looks in good shape otherwise I have no idea what the frame stubs look like. The interior was really clean and didn't look worn out and amazingly the dash isn't faded at all. It has 138 thousand miles and they are asking $1500 for it, what are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Scott

P.S. If I can't manage to get this car because of monetary reasons I'll post the phone number so maybe someone else can get it, I think it's pretty good but I know very little.

With rusty rockers, the frame horns must be inspected! With 130K or more, it might need a rebuild if it was not maintained. Just sayin.

Thanks for the response JM, I hope to fine out more about it tomorrow as I cannot seem to find the paper I wrote the phone number on at the moment. As for the rockers the rust is a little oddly placed, there is one hole in each of them about midway down the length of the door, I'd never seen rockers look like that in just one place.

Actually JM looking through your project build on Christine I noticed that this car is an almost exact twin and the rust holes in the rockers are in the same spot.

And yes, it is a 3-cylinder. For 3rd generation Metros the hatchback 3 cylinders are all 5 speeds, although the 4 cylinder sedans did come in a 5 speed version. 3rd generation hatchbacks that are 4 cylinders are automatic transmission.

I took a closer look at the Geo today and noticed rust in the front frame stubs that didn’t look too good. I couldn’t see much as I could only see some of the frame behind the wheel so I called the owner whose name is Will and asked him about it. He had no idea that the frame was rusty and came over to show me more of the car. I looked it over and started it and popped the hood, the motor is dirty but runs well and I got some photos of the rust among other things. He is having to sell the Metro because he just bought a minivan to carry his family because the Metro isn’t big enough. I said that the most I would reasonably offer him is $700 and he said that he would take it and that I was the second person who had offered that much. Well being currently unemployed I don’t have $700 to just blow and I told him that if someone else got him the money first to go ahead and sell it, that it would be a good deal for him, I had mostly just called him to warn him and show him the frame so that it wouldn’t come back to bite him. I also asked to take the photos and to post them here as he had no idea a forum like this existed, he also gave me permission to give his number out to anyone interested so if you would like to contact him send me a message. If I had the money I would buy this car in a heartbeat but I don’t and since I live at home with my parents it has been a battle to get another car since I already have a couple that I don’t want to part with. Anyways on to the pictures and a few comments, sorry for the long post.

So should I try to get this one, or should I let it go? Anyone else interested?

Believe it or not that is less than half the price, it was $1500.

I'd walk away from this one. Too much rust in the frame horns. Unless you got it for $300 and had some welding skills. But even then......you never know how many miles you'll get until the frame breaks, and trust me, it WILL BREAK!!

That's what I figured, though honestly the frame felt quite solid when I poked around, but I trust your judgement more than mine, though finding a less rusted Metro near me may be easier said than done. Oh well.

I wonder if one of those frame braces that people have would strengthen the area and allow for welding? Though I suppose that would drive the cost up more, being unemployed sucks.

Problem is I am both of those things, short on cash, sort of, and I would love to fix the poor thing up, it just seems so sad that someone will get it and drive it till it breaks and then junk it because they didn't fix it when they could have, as in right now. I've never owned a Metro or even driven one but it seems I've been bitten buy the bug hard.

Lol bitten by the bug? Nevermind that i was swarmmed :D im in the process of buying my 7th geo, just trying to scrounge cash right now, the one i found is a one owner, rust free for 500 bucks, runs and drives, but a slippy transmission, Hence the main reasons i want it, low cost, and i have the spare tranny :P. Its super super clean also, and comes with 17's :/ HIGHLY doubt theyll fit, so if i do get it, ill have 17's to put on somthing else, or cut up one of my others and make teh suckers fit lol!

Pretty much, I just wish I had the money and the space for more cars, I'd love a more fuel efficient car like a Metro but I have two cars already, a 1966 Chevrolet Caprice and a 1978 Ford Thunderbird. The Caprice I got screwed on when I bought it and for the life of me I just cannot sell it, I like it and I don't think I'd ever be able to get another one like it. The Thunderbird was my Grandfather's and it was given to me for my high school graduation and with the way things are going now it will be the only thing I will ever get from them, so I can't get rid of it but both cars are currently out of commission, the Caprice needs a full engine rebuild along with everything else and the Thunderbird needs a new steering box, and obviously neither one gets acceptable gas mileage but I just don't have the heart to sell them. I'm in quite a position here, all I can think about are Metros and fixing and driving one while fixing my other cars to be fair weather cruisers but I just don't have any more space, I need help.

Sorry for the long winded post, I needed to get that out.
