Just bought my first car from my sisters dealership, for quite a reasonable price might i add. the car is a 2000 metro lsi 4 door sedan it has 33,000 miles, 1 previous owner, and is in overall tip top aesthetic condition and from what i've seen so-so mechanical condition. i bought the car for $1,500 ended up $1,932.00. filled her up three times, (after brought down to the red, just as a test for mpg of course), and have only gone 471 miles :( ?????!!!!!!! i checked the spark plugs and they were clean as a whistle! The oil was changed along with the oil filter before i bought her. aany help is much appreciated. i am tight on money and wanna know what i can do!

It will atleast let you eliminate some factors depending on the numbers. Others will chime in, also any check engine lights on?

I'm assuming you have a 1.3L with an automatic and you understand that you will not be getting the same mileage as the 1.0L 3 cylinder cars right?

Compression test would be a great place to start. Also check to see if you have any wheels that aren't spinning freely - jack the car up at each corner (one at a time) and make sure they roll freely. It's possible you could have a sticking brake caliper or a wheel bearing in less than optimal condition.

When the engine is at operating temperature, check the hoses on the back of the throttle body - they should both be hot. Is the air filter clean? Car pull to one side or the other - indicating an alignment is in order.

Is the transmission shifting through all the gears (it has 3)?

Good Luck!

i can understand it wouldn't have the crazy mpg as the 1.0L, but im not sure if it she be where its at. tomorrow im off of work and will run a little garage diagnosis. just looking for a couple hints or tips if this is the best that i can get standard. and it does go through all 3 gears pretty smoothly.

I understand. Some other things to check:

Tires properly inflated?

Tires the correct size? This is not to say other sizes won't work just that they may affect the odometer reading so it could register less than the distance you are actually travelling which will affect your mileage calculation.

Are you a 2 footed driver? (one foot on the brake, other foot on the gas) not only will this wear things out faster, it will cause a significant drop in mileage.

Are you driving gently and smoothly or driving it like you stole it? To get the best mileage you should be driving as if you don't have any brakes - nice and smooth, keep your foot off the brake as much as possible. All the brake is doing is turning your forward motion (which you consumed fuel to generate) into heat...

Engine compression is critical to these cars so the place to start really is with a compression test, it is the typically the first thing recommended but often the last thing that is actually done... http://geometroforum.com/topic/2574993/1/

Good Luck!

Have a mechanic adjust the valves. Should be done every 30000 miles on your car.

took 3 hours for all this help! would have taken my days to get this anywhere else! gotta love the geometroforum! but the tires are the correct size they have the o.g. hubcaps on them, i am a single footed driver and after doing some research i have been using my brakes ALOT less. never really even noticed how much i actually did! and also before i registered for the forum i would read threads and ever since then ive been driving her like a rolls royce . i try to accelerate as smoothly as i can and i like to keep top speed under 55 for the mpg. but first thing tomorrow is to check up about the compression test!

You guys are awesome!! :cheers

Only 30000 miles, you do not need a compression test.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION CITY HWY CMB
2000 CHEVROLET METRO
Auto(A3), 4 cylinders, 1.3 liter, F WD, 30 34 32

I wouldn't be worried. 1.3 automatics really don't get that good of gas mileage.

I agree, we'd have to hear how many gallons 3 tanks down to the red is since it varies so widely it could be anywhere from 5 to 7 gallons or more per fill.
