Just to clarify, are you saying that you only went 471 mile on 3 tanks of gas @ 8-9 gallons per fill up? So in other words, 24-27 gallons only got you 471 miles?

He almost has to be, because 470/27 is like 17ishMPG...and 470/9 is like 50ish MPG...and no one would complain about that.

How honest are your neighbors?

Invest in a locking gas cap and recheck your mileage.

Drive for another tank and record the actual amount of fuel and miles, rather than guessing....

Try this:

Take the car to ADVANCEDISCOUNTNAPAZONE parts store and get them to do a free code check. Then do a compression check. Keep a look out for fuel leaks or fuel thieves. That info will be a good basis to help isolate your problem.

Are you running the AC full time and driving up hill with the thing floored all the time? Otherwise, you got something wrong. NO WAY you are getting 17-20 mpg without a mechanical problem of some variety.

When you accelerate don't go over 70% throttle, any more and you're just dumping fuel. When you fill-up fill it until you can see fuel in the neck, not just when it clicks.

Welcome to your new forum, 650Metro! :coffee

Two stories on the gas cap. #1 I was sleeping on a side street, in my camper van, in the raised top on a hammock and I heard a noise. Looked down and some guy had pulled up drivers' window to the van's driver's side and was siphoning gas out of my van into a can in his cab. I came down flat footed in the van and must have really scared him that he took off very fast.
#2 is about students who knew a teacher kept mpg records so they added gas for a month or so. The teacher was happy and a bit confused. Then the students removed gas and listened to the teachers' complaints until they finally told him about the prank. :-/

Might jack the car up and see if the wheels spin freely. Bad bearings, brakes, and alignment can affect mileage and might show in tire wear.

Yeah, owning a Geo can lead to Obsessive Compulsive Fuel Efficiency Concerns. OCFEC? Or the more common term: OCMPGD. :lol

By the way, how fast do you travel, usually?
