Stating it's either the "transmission or alternator" is suspect. Those are two entirely different things. The car should fire up regardless of the condition of those two items as long as you have cranking juice in the battery. I suspect compression, or lack thereof. If it's got a solid body, yet needs a rebuild, offer $500.

Also, co-owner? I don't know about where you live, but here both owners must sign. If only one person signs, it may not be valid.

Co owner does in fact mean that both owners need to sign, if only one signs it still is not valid, Id stay away unless you are just wanting it for parts. Since it more than likely couldnt be re registered.
