Cheapest Way to Ship a Transmission?; Re: a 5 speed

Way

I know some members here have shipped a couple, just wanted to pick their brains in a non-zombie way. :)
Also how do you pack it? What's required etc.

Depends.

I put a piece of 1/2 wood down inside a box, close to the size of the box. Then I set the transmission in there, covered in a garbage back. Then I break up large pieces of cardboard/styrofoam and stuff it beside it until the box is ready to blow, then I put another piece of wood on top...or leave the top piece off and just stuff the top too.

and make certain whomever packs it REMOVES ALL THE OIL and packs it in plastic.

I've shipped transaxles to and from Northern California to Texas and LA. They are heavy, expect the nigh shift guys to toss it on and off the truck. Quadruple thick snug fitting cardboard. I like the addition of plywood as a stiffener :-)

I've heard that greyhound or trailways bus lines ship heavy? objects like a tranny for a reasonable cost.

Fedex will bend you over. UPS might be better on the price. USPS will hose you also because of the weight.

Might try a freight company like USA trucking.

Cheapest used to be Greyhound bus... they toss it in the belly, new owner picks it up at the nearest bus depot. Other than that, UPS.

Pack it where it absolutely will not move around in the box. I got a really big double wall box and made it a quadruple wall box. That box made 3 trips with a Metro transmission installed. Keep the weight under 70, or UPS will bend you over the counter. If I had to do it again, I would build a box out of wood.

Hey thanks guys!

UPS or Greyhound it is I guess. Freight might be a bit much, not sure.

I've got ton of boxes to pick from too as well as wood scraps. I'll make sure it's under 70 lbs too.

Also thanks for the reminder about draining the oil.

:cheers

Don't be a "Richard"

I just got a quote to send an automatic tranny that weighed 120 pounds thru UPS. (they have a 150 pound limit) and it can't be over 165 inches in circumfrence.

It was right between $75-$80

I didn't think that was to bad.

That's pretty good actually especially for that weight.

I shipped a 50lb block for <40 dollars.

UPS is really reasonable. And when I said I stuffed it, I meant it. Pack if like they're going to drop it from shoulder height several times....because they will.

Too bad it won't fit in a large USPS flat-rate box. I have the flat-rate boxes and envelopes on hand for shipping stuff I sell on ebay and what-not. Fast and easy, and it makes it where it needs to go anywhere in the country in two days.
