Pretty nice looking ride I think. Similar to the Nissan Leaf as it's a plug in only.

"Both Focus gasoline and electric variants to be sold in North America will be built at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich., with production powered in part by one of the largest solar energy generator systems in the state."

That solar energy generator company also agreed to build at-home solar charging stations for customers for an additional $10k so you can get "free" energy to recharge the Focus Electric. Pretty neat, but I don't know how many people will jump on that solar charging station.

Should be cool, but just think about the cost. It's never going to pay for itself. I'll take 100 geos for the same price any day of the week... granted they won't be running geos. hehe

an electric can EASILY beat a geo in price. even a used geo just in gas savings.

but it depends on how long a lifespan you can get on the battery and how much the initial cost of the car is.

if the battery is good for over 200,000 miles and cost (car) less than $20k it will EASILY beat even a $500 geo.

Remember I spend $3200 a year in gasoline. so my "savings" would be instantly $2800 a year after subtracting the electricity to charge it per year. if the car lasted 10 years it would save me $28,000 in gasoline.

10 years is a heck of a long time. Don't forget you have to pay for electricity and the price of that isn't going to stay reasonable for much longer. Many plants are going to close soon or have closed due to excessive regulations and plant age. Who's to say you won't be spending 2800 per year in electricity costs in the next 10 years due to lack of available energy? Also, what about the payment cost on that new electric focus.... the insurance you'll have to buy... not to mention the lack of proven tech. It all sounds great till you crunch the numbers. Even making a Geo electric isn't a wise idea. It adds excessive weight, shortens the range, and increases costs on a vehicle that's already simple and somewhat efficient as is. I'm not trying to poo poo on the idea of the electric Focus, but there is a reason that Nissan targeted 120k per year earners with more than 1 car for it's new Leaf car. It's just not fiscally responsible no matter how cool it looks.

Did anyone catch the range on it? I would personally prefer to have a backup engine like the Volt.

All indications here in Detroit say 60-100 miles MAX. It's an impressive car with good looks, but just won't meet expectations on price.

So IF we drive as much as you do (most people drive half that much)

And IF the car cost $20K (most cost twice that much)

And IF the battery lasts 200K miles (they don't, 120 to 130K is more like it)

Then it makes good financial sense. Yet another well reasoned argument from Nerys.

Electric car discussion = :horse

I did notice that Ford is calling this a Fuel-free car. What's up with that? Electricity is not fuel?

blow me woodie. if they would put damned NIMH pack in the car it would last 300k (tested and proven) and still keep going and cost half as much.

AND your comparing it to a freaking $600 metro.

Compare it to another "brand new" car (any one you pick) and it pays for itself in a few years.

which is why they won't make them.

"financial sense"

If you're already buying a new car, sure, an electric isn't that bad of an idea.
If you want to save money it's a terrible idea.

I used the same argument when analyzing the Chevy Volt, recently purchased by one of my Gal's clients. Her client owns a winery, and has solar panels on the property bought and paid for by his business. The winery may even be LEED Certified, kind of a big deal in the valley these days. He charges off-grid all day, from panels his business paid for and drives home every night but does not plug in. So long as he was going to buy a $30k car anyhow (this guy was going to, and can afford to), his commute costs are reduced by his annual gas consumption which was about $2k/yr. Not huge, but some return. He gets to feel good, as he has reduced his buying of Middle east oil, nor charging from a petroleum fired powerplant. Not such a bad thing...
