I was driving to my mom's house in Yucca Valley, Calif. back in 1992 when a 7.4 struck. I didn't feel it 50 miles away, driving. Drove into town, saw everyone standing around the back of the bowling alley. Looked like they were doing construction on the back wall - which was gone. Some people, eh. Mom was freaking. So after an hour or so we were watching TV and there were maybe 100 TV vehicles parked at the bowling alley. It was crazy. That wall was the most sever destruction. The fun part was that there was a few second delay in the news feed so we knew the aftershock was just a jolt or rolling before the newscaster. It was like 'Hey, watch the reporter freak out thinking it could be another big one." ![]() But, yeah, there was nothing else on TV for a day. And, you could slam a door and watch people freak out.

Started a new job this week in Culpeper, VA. About 30 miles from epicenter. Our building shook like hell. First thought was an earthquake or a huge train had derailed next door. It was also VERY loud while it was going on. There have also been several aftershocks since. There is a lot of damage in downtown Culpeper. Lots of older buildings with brick fronts that fell off. Target store damaged, several stores had all the stuff thrown off the shelves & lots of busted jars, etc. Several houses and buildings have been condemned. Some already torn down this week. Several older homes destroyed & must come down. Also had a really bad storm come through Thursday & lost power for a day, tore the place up, lots of downed trees & now a hurricance today. All things considered, it's been an interesting week. |
