I have been thinking about this thread all day. Here are a few things that I do.This is strictly for what it is worth. You maybe able to save you carport or out buildings by lashing it down. A few runs of rope or small cable will do wonders to help keep a a carport of shed roof on. Many times when things are built there are areas that that could be lifted during high winds. I put my billfold in a baggie and prepare as if I was going boating. I live very close to the water so I have a life jacket ready to wear. Right before the storm hits, I put on my shoes and dress to go outside. It is no fun if you lose your roof or a window blows in and you are in your underwear. I run a rope from the the front door to my car. I needed to get to my car during a storm and found it almost impossible to do so. Also be very careful when you open the car door, the wind can rip it right from your hands. If you are in trouble, you will have a little time when the eye passes over. Do what you have to and be ready because it may not last as long as you think. Nothing is as important as the safety of you and your loved ones. No need to be a hero. Things can be replaced, You cant. Before and during a storm your Wife and Children can really get caught up in the news and doom sayers. Try to keep them calm and stay positive. The odds are in you favor that you are going to be just fine. To every one who maybe effected with this storm, Please take care, use common sense and if there is anything I (and I am sure I speak for others) can do feel free to let me(us) know.

I was not trying to be funny. It can get hot in the house with all the windows boarded up and no power. In Fredric, many years ago, I was just wearing some jogging pants and sandals when a large pine tree fell across the bed room in the middle of the storm. Lesson learned. |

Oh I don't have anything against bugging out if its going to be bad. I have an issue with being "ORDERED" too. I am not some punk kid who's parents are giving orders. I am not some grunt with a drill sergeant giving orders too. I am a free sentient human being and if I am not doing anything wrong "I DO NOT RECOGNIZE" any authority to give me "orders" unless there is a clear and present need to OTHERS. you want to make a request? give a suggestions? warn of a hardship (maybe no rescue for a while etc..) fine. but don't tell me its "mandatory" I leave my home. |

Feel free to stay and ignore the warnings. If you happen to die no one will really give a damn anyways. Your only issue is that you have never ridden out a cat 4 or 5 near the water. Ignorance is bliss.

" Mandatory Evacuation " means only that the Gubmint has decided it is not safe for them to send personnel into your area. House catches fire, tough, put it out yourself. No fire trucks coming your way. Neighbor threatens you with his gun, tough, deal with it. No police either. Beating the kids? No child protective service. They'll get counseling later. You are on your own. Wild wild west, only 200 years more civilized. I am sure you have contingencies in place for all the possible scenarios. I don't, I'll deal with what comes as it comes. I'm as prepared as I'm gonna get. I don't buy into the "End-Of-The-World" crap. (now every one is going to tell me how under informed or idiotic I may be, so be it) BTW, So far, So good. Wind = check, Rain = check, Darwin (the lifeguard) pulling people from the gene pool = check, Some dumb_ss tried to take his 18foot sailboat out off the Carolina coast this A.M. Boat is fine, (won't be for long, the CG just beached it) he isn't. Worst of the storm to hit here around 6:00p.m. Eye should be just off VA coast @ Virginia beach then. Highest storm surge coupled with mean high tide. Expecting 7' to 8' above flood level. Isabel was 10' over. My mom is more worried than me. My grandson just made a trip to the corner convenience store for a soda and some candy. I'm considering taking the Geo out for a check on the locals to see how many of us idiots are on the road. TTFN, stay tuned, more to come... |

I've lived in Florida all my life, and maybe my area is just sheltered, but I've never had the slightest worry about a hurricane. I remember during Opal, a cat 4 I believe, sitting on the porch watching things blow around the yard. No worries. Only thing that would scare me is a tornado coming by. |

Got some pics already, nothing spectacular; trampoline in the road, tree down, light pole down, Future S-i-L is sending them to TV station now. We lost a 9 year old boy. He was playing in his upstairs bedroom when the wind knocked down a tree on his house. The tree came straight through his room and the force was so great it (the tree) went all the way to the ground floor. Pray for him and his family. Water is over the board walk now, that puts level 6' over normal high tide. Tornado warnings extended till 9:00p.m. TTFN |

Sitting in the pilot's lounge watching the weather channel. It's sad to hear about the loss of life. Crazy weather channel people standing in the rain getting blown by the wind. Stay safe, and God bless all of you. |

Well we made it through. No trees on the house or anything. We are somewhat inland here. Surprised we still have power. |
