I had a burnt #3 exhuast valve on a 1991 1.0L and had the head redone at Napa with ss valves. Took the pistons out and put rings and rod bearings in it while I was in there. I get it all back together and have a tapping in it which sounds like a valve tap. I put new lifters in it from Dino Parts so I would think it would not be a bad lifter. I have only let it run for a few min or so and have not driven it yet. Should I take it for a spin and see if it goes away? |

Sounds very much like the lifters aren't yet fully pumped up. Some guys report it taking 20+ minutes for the tapping to go away. Assuming the tapping is minor (not clanging and banging) and you are running the correct weight oil (5-30) I think you would be safe to go for a short spin. |

I agree. Mine did this after a rebuild. It was gone after about 2 miles down the road. |

Bingo.. that's why they say to soak the lifters overnight in oil. Mine started right up with no sounds after doing that. Extra special thanks to all those that recommended that ahead of time to me. JM... I'm looking at you. |

Could you not just prime them? fil 'em with oil before you reassemble them? |

I think one might run the risk of over filling. Valves not closing. Like we've seen on here before. Seems they pump up better than they bleed down. It took mine more than a couple miles to settle down and stop clicking. You should be fine.

Hey thanks for the info. I took my little car for a test drive and what fun it was. It's kind of like a toy car. The tapping nosie went away after a few miles or so and is running great. I did soak the lifters for a few days before installing them. I guess it just needed to be driven a bit. Do you guys think Mobile 1 syn 5w30 is a good choice after the motor is droken in? |

Just don't get in too big of a hurry to convert to synthetic oil, you need to let the rings seat well. Personally I would use dino oil for the first couple of oil changes - I'd do one at 100 miles, the next at 1500 miles and a third at 3000 miles. At that point if all was well and oil consumption was negligible (or non-existant) I'd convert to synthetic. |

I am not sure what dino oil is. Where can I get some of it? I have Pennzoil 5w-30 in it at the moment. I drove it casually on the first run which was about 10 miles and have not driven it since. I have some other work to do to it yet. I need to get the windshield replaced. I got a price from a local shop for $260. What about oil filters? |

"Dino" oil is just conventional, non-synthetic motor oil. As soon as you can, drive it more aggressively. A good oil filter for your '91 1.0 is the Purolator PureONE PL10241. Advance Auto has an online price of $5. If you print out the web page, take it to their local store near you and ask them to price match their web price. |

PL20195 is about twice as big and matches up in every other respect. Bigger is better. |

My oil consumption after my first oil change was less than 1/16 of an in aka none. I could have parked differently and influenced it that much. I changed at 200 miles. My second change currently has 800 miles on it and it is still exactly on full. FWIW |
