3 weeks ago, I bought this 1998 1.3 automatic that had no reverse.

They had just put new radials on it 3 months ago.

The owner only wanted $250.00 and I needed the tires for my main daily driver.

I bought it for the tires and figured the car was the cost of going to get it.

(3 1/2 hours each way.) and $80.00 in gas in the big white van in the background.

The frame looks free of rust.

It was in good overall shape, some rust on the rocker panels, but looks good inside and out.

The tranny was solid in all forward gears, but would not go into reverse.

I read a lot about SEAFOAM in the forums and decided to try it before I tore the transmission out.

I put "Seafoam transmission tune" in it a week and a half ago and drove around for 20 minutes.

No change, still no reverse. So I just parked it, forgot about it and we finished up harvest. :-/

I went out about 3 hours ago and decided to drive it around and warm it up. I just put it in drive and went for a 5 mile drive.

When I got back to the house and tried reverse.... It popped right into reverse and held solid!! :thumb

Must have been a stuck valve or solenoid that got freed up by the Seafoam.

It has been working fine all afternoon in any situation I have put it in in reverse.

I will do a full transmission oil change now and will see what happens!

I guess I lucked out on this one. It is a driver! :drivin :banana

I just hope it stays that way..... ^o)

Now I just need to learn how to fix the rust in the rocker panels. :news

Does everyone in Central Oregon drive metros?

Metros were, and still are very popular around here due to driving distances for just about everything.
It is 55 miles to town for us to get to a grocery store, most parts stores, or a doctor.
Central Oregon is Very Rural.

I know it wont fix worn out plates or burned bands, but according to a lot of forum information it can clean and free up stuck parts.
I just had to try the way it was acting. I will let the forum know if it keeps working. I sure hope it will......

Johnny, I wonder what a pint of that Seafoam that the reporter is knee deep in, would do to my engine?? :hmm
It sure would be cheaper by the bucket full!

I might have to try a seafoam treatment in my transmission, might save me from having to pull it out and clean it/replace it.

The transmission was not slipping and it was shifting correctly in 1rst 2nd and drive.
I could put it in drive and it would go from a stop to 65 mph with fairly smooth shifts thru all gears.
It just was not engaging reverse. No change from park or neutral to reverse.
I checked the wiring and it was all correct and intact. The linkage seemed to be correct also.
I was going to do Johnny's solenoid tests later this fall when I had more time, but I thought I would try the Seafoam Trans Tune.
I don't know if it was the driving with it in it or just letting it sit for almost two weeks with the Seafoam in it.
It seems to have freed up a valve or solenoid.
It now engages reverse with no slip or hesitation.

I am going to do a full oil change and check that the valve body and solenoids are not messed up like the one I saw on another thread.
I am hoping that it holds together........

Ah, what mine is doing, is going right into third. skips L and 2, so when you hit the gas all you hear is a slight grinding noise, till you take off in L, then go through gears that way, then its fine. Im thinking gummed up valve body

Seafoam Trans tune is on sale at NAPA for $7.00 in the northwest.
It couldn't hurt. I drained about a pint of trans fluid out and poured in the Trans Tune.
( I used a siphon tube down the dipstick.) Tastes nasty :rasp

I don't know anything about them, but I know there is a transmission control module?????
Someone else will need to explain its workings to me, but have you looked at it?

Duct tape heals all wounds

<sigh> I only wish I could have found a score like that one. At $250. I wouldn't have cared if it were auto or not ;)
