For those of you who predicted this....your 'told you so' is heard loud and clear. I was not knowledgeable enough to understand what was being said. Ok....got that out of the way The distributor arrived in Texas today. Fainya wasted no time. Below is his picture. ![]() Excerpts from his email "The break was caused by fatigue in the metal part..... At this time the following things will be done to get this distributor rebuilt. Main shaft seal Main bearing Build drive gear (dog) this will add a day to the rebuild. Acquire 2 advance springs (one is broken, other is quite worn) Distributor housing o ring Clean and glass bead housing Reset air gap on pickup coil." |

Today...I get 2 messages at the same time on my cell phone. One, a picture of the distributor... from son Karl (19). New tang on right (pulled it out of the car for this picture....has oil on it) ![]() ![]() It arrived at the warehouse where he works. One from fainya....also with news that the distributor has arrived. Left: old tang out/cleaned up Right: new springs And instructions. Many thanks to fainya for his fine workmanship ![]() I called Hans and asked him if he wanted me to put it in. Course not! Hans got home from work when it was almost dark. Remember the wiring was toasted? Hans learned how to wire up a new connector. Distributor installed/vacuum hoses hooked up/innercooler connected/cables connected. It started right up. He was so amped. Just wonderful to hear the little car running again It fits his 6'4" frame with room to spare. It's the sun roof benefit. Anyhow....he is taking it out for a spin. Wait for it. Ahhhhh He made it halfway around the block and it died. He and his neighbor buddy pushed it home...puff puff...through the snow. Mom looks. Loose battery negative cable. Tightened up. Hans takes Mom along for a much longer spin (with tools) He drives ![]() Mom listens. The heater stops working...(hit it on the side) it works. Air duct falls down on the floor. Feel the hot air source and wiggle it back into place. Defroster on right side works again. Tach/Speedometer surround is falling off. Find 1 of the 2 screws on the floor....it's somewhat fastened. Find several other screws...put them in the ash tray. Steering wheel works, but all the cover pieces are in the back seat. Tomorrow. Hans concentrates on his driving. The green TURBO light is working fine. We get back home. He gives me a bug bear hug and says thanks. I'm really happy for him. Edited by Jittney, Mar 10 2012, 11:44 PM.

So....how is the little car been doing? Tuesday night it was fine. Wednesday I biked over to his work on my lunch hour. He was still beaming. I'd found a mini leatherman on my bike ride over....and said maybe he should keep it. He didn't need it....said he's got tools in the car and listed them off. I reminded him that those are my tools. He laughed...imagine that! and then he made me lunch at his restaurant. Thursday when I got home, my car was gone, and his turbo was parked I called him at his work. 'Sorry, busy at work...um....crank, no start....um....had no time to fix it...yada yada...took your car, sorry'He came home late and without me saying anything, he got to work. He pulled the battery and tray, took out the main chassis and transmission grounds, cleaned the contacts, chased the threads on the bolts, put it back in and fired it up. Dang! He must have found time to read a thread or two at work. He tossed the wrench in his back seat Then he was off to see his sisters...taking them places....home late. Friday I finally drove my car to work for the first time in 6 weeks. Friday he went outside and saw my backup car was gone and said 'please, please, please start' to his turbo. Nope. He called me at work. Sorry, busy at work...um....crank, no start?...um....check your connections and grounds....I have my car, sorry I have a long enough lunch hour that I could zip home and either hope to help, or let him drive me back and use my car. I got home...looked in the open hood...spied the loosened wire by the new connector...pushed it back into the crimped section....it fired up. Dang! That was easy. I went inside for tea. He crimped it better....and threw the electrician pliers in the back seat. He added oil, tightened the alternator belt, put the innercooler back on....all in 15 minutes. Tools were, again, tossed in the back seat Unused tools get returned to my tool box. I think he's pretty well set on tools....not sure about me anymore. Since then, he's not had any problems....but, should they come up, he's got tools. The car idles much smoother now. Fainya says a rebuilt distributor will gain 1-2 mpg. Not sure Hans will see it, the way he drives According to one of his sisters, he is not too shabby at ebraking/drifting corners. Streets are plenty snowy...so it's ok? He was such a mild mannered driver when he drove my metro. Don't know what happened

My sons seem to have a similar affliction with tools and supplies. I can't count the number of times I have gone to get something that was previously there and is now either used up or somewhere else. If it happens when they need help I simply say "I used to have an XXXXX but I don't anymore. I have been to the place where I keep XXXX and it's not there so I'm pretty sure I don't have the tool/supply to do the job, not sure I can help you..." While it hasn't stopped the dingbats it has at least slowed them down and occasionaly brings an Aha moment to them (reminding them that they were the responsible party for the current situation and sometimes resulting in the tool being returned to where it belongs). |

If the streets are snowy then it is fine to e-brake. However, any dry pavement could catch a rear wheel and damage it or the bearings and a front wheel might cause loss of control. I practice in the RWD company truck and can even drift it in 4WD on ice. It makes for better driving to know how it feels when you encounter oversteer or understeer. Nice of him to drive your Metro more conservatively.

Pulled the timing belt cover to discover this one on the right. The one on the left is a spare I have. ![]() Background: Water pump replaced last fall by Hans and iceman. Alternator and underdrive pulleys were changed to line up with substitute metro water pump. It was a new one I had downstairs....= free Timing belt was changed from narrow V to wider style. Car ran fine, except an intermittent muffled noise. We thought it was the pulleys not quite lined up. Saturday....Took a day trip to get car parts. Oil leak was obvious....changed the dipstick oring. Also added MMO in the expectation of changing the oil the next day. Sunday.....Another trip and now oil was dripping at the oil pan corner. Added oil for the return trip....made it home...pulled the oil pan. Before putting it back on, decided to check cam and crank seals. Hans pulled the timing belt cover. The idle tensioner spins fine by hand...off the car. Not tight enough? |

Almost looks like the tensioner got bound up and didn't spin, resulting in the one side being worn away. I would have expected the timing belt itself to give up the ship before the pulley wore away... Perhaps there was/is a sticky spot in the bearing where it would occasionally "catch"? Definitely time for replacement - congrats on finding it before it let go. |

You may be able to use to newer style tensioner bearings with the metal face, ever thought of that? |
