Fusible link from battery to positive terminal on the ignition coil does not work. I seem to recall reading someplace that the ECU doesn't allow it. Non fusible link from battery to BL/W on backside of ignition does not work (get a spark at the end, consistently) Non fusible link from positive terminal of ignition coil to BL/W on backside of ignition does the same thing. Wire on the ignition coil positive terminal is BL/W Wire on the backside of the key cylinder is also BL/W Resistance on the wire is 0.9....so the wire from the ignition to the coil is OK. Going to pull the cap and rotor and see if NAPA has one. Edited by Jittney, Jan 22 2012, 07:10 PM.

The reason I suggested putting a jumper from the battery + to the ign coil was to check if there is a faulty contact or connection in the ign switch. Going from the Bat+ to the coil checks the B/W wire from the switch through the fuse and all the related connections. It should also feed and light the turbo indicator light (#7). Electrically it is exactly the same as if the switch were working so the ECU cannot sense which way the power is being supplied. Feeding power to the B/W wire on the back of the ign switch, had the other jumper worked, would check whether the problem was between the battery to the switch wiring, in which case the jumper would make it work OR between the switch to the coil wiring, in which case the new jumper to the switch B/W would not work. I hope this helps a little as to why I suggested the quick checks. i do suspect that the rotor/cap will do the trick. That rotor looks

Thanks, clarkdw. Hans is off finding the rotor for the Turbo...they have one at a NAPA farther away...of course. ![]() I took a tea break....which is when I finally realized....the ground! We didn't ground the coil to the frame while running any of the jumpers. Edit: wrong train of thought? after rechecking the diagram you so nicely posted. Negative should go to the ignitor knock controller? Edited by Jittney, Jan 22 2012, 08:14 PM.

Oh, Oh. Yep, yep coil needs to be grounded. You had it unbolted? Also, I think that the schematic you posted is an uber simplified one. I checked the wiring diagrams in my multiyear Haynes manual for the early multiport fuel injected engines and it shows some wires that are not shown in the posted one. Do you have a third wire coming off the coil that is BRN/WHT? It should go to the ign control module. |

The schematic was from the Turbo Supplemental manual that t3ragtop posted. Yes, there is a brown wire off the negative terminal. It, and the BL/W off the positive terminal are sheathed together and go to the connector as seen below.

OK...new cap and rotor..no luck. Grounded the negative terminal of the ignition coil to the frame. No luck. I took the distributor cable off the ignition coil to watch. It sparks at the beginning of trying to start and at the end. |

Well rather than engage in a round of what if's? I think that the correct paln is to replace the rotor/ cap and move on from there. Fix the known before taking on the unknown.

You needed the rotor for sure! Now check the air gap. Did you remove a spark plug and see if you were getting spark at it while cranking over after replacing the rotor? |

Ok, so much for the rotor/ cap theory. Now on to the unknown. I think that there is some confusion as to my intention on the grounds. The coil needs to remain connected to ALL the wires, positive and negative for the jumper tests. Do not add any extra grounds, etc. Just add the jumper with everything else left as it was. OMG I'm such a slow typist. |

In that case, the testing you suggested has been done, and it doesn't run. The new cap and rotor....it's all good. What say you (meaning all of you) now? |

Put everything back together as it should be, pull one spark plug out and ground it and crank the car over and see if you see any spark at all at the spark plug. Internet diagnoses is so frustrating

Go back to post 41. You have no signal from coil to brown wire within 2 secs of key on. We need to pursue that. I need a bit of time to go through the old posts and wiring diag. Edit: post 44 not 41 Edited by clarkdw, Jan 22 2012, 09:01 PM.

You need to go thru a diagnostic flow chart and check things in that order following one persons directions and keeping it to the diagnostic order. I have a chart or maybe someone else does, does not matter who but to cut down on confusion it should really be one person. |

Let's leave it until tomorrow. I'll have a bit of light when I come home from work. We have the means to get Hans back and forth to work tomorrow. I do appreciate all that everyone has done. I still have misgivings about the looseness in the ignition switch... ...because it's so very recent and coincides with the problem. Blue rhino, I still don't understand the gap thingy. I don't know that I have a set of feeler gauges (hangs head in shame) |
