We recently acquired a rust-free 1996 Geo Metro 3/5 from member pacopperhead which needs a little TLC. I originally worked on this car about a year ago and you can read about it HERE.

Here is the car in it's current condition............

Note the Swift front end parts from a deer collision a few months ago. After the deer collision the radiator burst and the car was driven around 50 miles with no coolant in it and it overheated. When I got it home, I also found it overheating and compression building up in the coolant. I suspected a head gasket, but if I am gonna crack it open, I am gonna do it all. I had just enough time to yank the head off and get it on the bench, but I will have to get some time this weekend to investigate further. Not much carbon in this engine at all :rocker

Already have a head ready.........

The items that need attention after the rebuild are as follows.........

Loose steering (Play in steering wheel). - DONE
Transmission (This tranny was rebuilt at a shop, but 2nd gear must be held in or it pops out) - DONE
Body (Hood and fender get painted and she wants to keep the newer style headlights and bumper on)
Interior (Steering wheel, dashboard, and center console getting swapped with Christine from bad fade) - DONE
Air Bags (Both were deployed and driver's one was replaced from a Swift) - DONE
Wheel covers (already took care of that....) - DONE

By time I am done with this car, it will be like new again. This is a clean, rust-free chassis........

This car will not be driven in the winter either. I am finally relieved to be able to get my wife in a safer car. She was going to totally give up on driving another Geo Metro especially after 3 frame/suspension near death experiences in 3 different cars.

I will continue to update this thread as it gets repaired.

Got the engine all together with a rebuilt head, new rings, and a cylinder hone. The rod bearings were in good shape so I reused them. Here is a pic of the car after I took it for a good test drive........

I also swapped out the steering wheel and driver's airbag from the wife's old 97 which has a "Geo" emblem on the airbag instead of the plain Swift one. The passenger inside mirror cover was broken and I also replaced that. The wife drove it back and forth to work today and got lots of comments on her new ride. Next items to take care of is the paint work and then a dash swap.

Hey JM, if you can remember...............How long will/did it take to do the dash replacement. Could you time it for us. Might be of help for some members in the future so they have some basis on how much time to allot for such an endeavour.
