Fear the Mullet

I tore down the car again over the weekend. When I pulled the pistons out, I found one of the oil rings somehow went up the side of the piston. I thought to myself "Great! I found the knock." The groove in the cylinder wall was small and it honed right out. I stole a set of pistons from another engine and replaced the rings and rod bearings. After I got the car together, it still made the knocking noise, but not loud on startup. By this time I am pretty upset and so is the wife. This morning as a last ditch effort, I pulled the cam and found all the lifters that I cleaned and freed up were seized again ![]() Again I think to myself that this was the problem all along. I stole the new lifters from Ecomudder's head and popped them in. After about 5 minutes the lifters pumped up and went quiet. I revved the engine and this piece of shit is still knocking. I said fuck it and told the wife to drive it until it blows because I don't give a shit anymore. I am out of used shit and I am not going to keep stealing parts from other engines to make it work. I am going to hunt down a reman engine for this car I suppose. I am also hearing a slight knock from my 92 XFi ![]() I am very close to selling these cars and junking the Ecomudder. |

I only have one good block left and that is Ecomudder's block. I know I am pretty mad and talking shit, but I suppose I can rebuild it completely or better yet have a machine shop rebuild it so I got at least one running Metro. |

Steady boss, we've all been there. Ask me why I hung a heavy bag in the basement some day, it has saved a lot of walls over the years. |

It actually is logical. Sell the XFi, sell the 96, junk the Ecomudder, and go buy a Honda Civic. Since 2008, I have owned 4 (driveable) Metros. All 4 of them needed overhauled, 3 out of the 4 blew transmissions, 3 out of the 4 literally broke the frame and almost caused serious accidents, 3 out of the 4 needed every front suspension part replaced, 2 out of the 4 burnt up wheel bearings, and all 4 needed oil leaks fixed. If I was not a mechanic, the fuel savings would not match the repair bills. I did the math. Don't get me wrong. I love these little cars, but their reliability is way below average in my opinion and experience. |

EDIT: You can't multiply the cost x4 because you've owned four, no one made you have four. Fix one the right way and it will treat you right for another 200k miles. Geo Glenn has a nice one for 850...he'll even help you install it...if you need it

Did you read the story where I was about to rebuild the Wife's '96 because of a knocking. Got the mechanic's stethoscope out and traced it to the EGR? Turned out it was the EGR gasket. Basically an exhaust leak. Same on the '91 only it was the distributor. nothing inside or the advalce mechanism so I sprayed carb. cleaner in the advance hoses and it went away. It started advancing the timing correctly. You need a vacation April 21st down south so you can shop for a rust free Geo.

Someone needs a hug. ![]() Let's not forget that we're dealing with 20+ year old cars, pushing 200,000 miles, from the rust belt. I have a feeling that any mfg is going to suffer most of the same woes with that age and environment. That's why I'm actively pursuing a southern car. And will be learning how to overhaul transmissions too. With a $5,000 budget, I feel that I can have a brand new, rust free car, that looks good, gets close to 50mpg, and will go well over 100,000 miles.

This 96 is a totally clean, rust-free Geo and that is why I am wanting to make it perfect again. The 92 has been patched up and repaired and should be OK for now unless the engine goes. We took the time and swapped the dash and interior from Christine to this 96 before we sold it. The interior is beautiful, the body is great except it needs paint, the trans was swapped and it's perfect. The only issue is the engine knock that is driving my totally bonkers especially after all I went through refreshing the engine, replacing the block and head and pulling the engine twice. I am just really hot right now and talking out my ass, so never mind me. I will get over it. We want to take this 96 to Florida for Geos on the Gulf, but it seems the only way to do it is steal the block from Ecomudder which will put that project on hold probably for another year. I have refreshed probably 20 G10 engines in my shop and never had a comeback. This latest episode I am having with this car is making me not want to do anymore work on customer's cars for fear of something going wrong with someone else's car. |

Snow, I deeply respect you, and in this case agree with you, but I think we should fly Jittney down to do the actual hugging, especially if you are still holding that fish in your hand and have that 5 o'clock shadow on your face |

I just got a call from Coyote X and he might be on to something. He told me if it was a bearing, the car would have blown by now and not last the 3-4 months we been driving it. Especially if I already replaced the block and head and it still knocked. He seems to think the knock is coming from a clogged cat or EGR or maybe even a bad throttle body. The car was severely over-heated and it still has the original cat and intake on it. What do you guys think? |

Need to hear knock. Might help to put a oil pressure gauge on it and see what the oil pressure is. |
