Why you Mutt!

Tried honing the #1 cylinder (the one with the scratches) a couple days ago. They seem to be pretty much gone now. I stuck a ring in that cylinder and the next one (undamaged)...can't see any difference, but couldn't find my feeler gauge to verify. I purchased another feeler gauge, but haven't had a chance to check for any variance between the cylinders. Maybe I can get away without the block going to a machine shop???

Maybe, maybe not.

You could gamble and win, or you could gamble and lose....and be back where you are now, a month from now.

Well...back when I was about 17, I honed the hell out of a Corvair cylinder (had a broken piston). Had a nasty piston slap when I was done. Drove it like that for over 40k miles (about 3 years in those days) before the piston self-destructed.

Of course...with a Corvair, all I had to do was get another piston/cylinder set, slap it in, and it was as good as new.

Just don't forget to check the ring end gap before putting it back together. If it's within spec, then go with it.

Why is it everyone i see uses rubber latex gloves when working on an engine? High maintenance people much... afraid of oil and grease? Muahaha Sorry bout the engine tho. But when its rebuilt itll be in the past.
Reason I have a few reasons for the latex (or nitrile) gloves:

1. Used motor oil is known to the state of California to contain chemicals that can cause cancer or reproductive harm. I guess if you live outside of California, there's no problem.

2. A slight bit of protection...if you skin a knuckle, it helps keep dirt out of the wound.

3. Keeps unsightly grease from building up on the pores of your hands, and from under the finger nails. This keeps the ladies happy. ;)

Note -- I meant to post this last week...accidentally hit "report" instead of "quote"! Confused the heck outta me when it didn't post, and puzzled the moderator, who was wondering why I was reporting this!

I just picked up some bottles of Castrol from Walmart, and I'm pretty sure they say right on the bottle about used motor oil being a cause for skin cancer. However, I never heard of a mechanic (who went bare skin) with skin cancer on his/her hands. It may happen, just never heard of it.

1. Sex DOES cause cancer. Reason: Sex causes babies. All cancer victims were, at the beginning of their lives, babies. Therefore, sex causes cancer.

2. Sex may not CAUSE, but becomes a transmission path for various diseases. Everything from herpes (which ain't nuthin'), to syphilis and gonorrhea (which can be cured) to AIDS (which more people are living with instead of dying, but it puts a crimp in your lifestyle).

3. Sex can lead to marriage...causing stress (especially if there are children)...which can kill.

4. Worst of all...sex leads to......DANCING! ON SUNDAYS! :D

Now...back to the original topic...which is already in progress!

An update...I've looked at the local PnP, have yet to find a head that didn't need work. Also I've had to deal with a few issues with the Benz. Fortunately, there is benzworld.org...a geometroforum.com for Benzes.

Anyway, I was looking at the damaged piston the other night, and I thought I saw a slight twist to the connecting rod. Wasn't sure, so I looked at a good piston...the rod looked straight. I think I want to mike the crank journals now...if something could bend a connecting rod, would it hammer the crank journal also?

That's what I'm afraid of. All I need now is time, between taking wife to the doctor, having the dentist terrorize my mouth, and rain coming...
