So, I had my friend look at my car the other day, and he said that I have a "Rod knock". And that I need a new engine. Is that true?? Also, I am having no luck finding one, anybody know how? Do I go Craigslist? Or is there somewhere I could buy a new one?? |

I've yet to hear of a G10 suffering from rod knock. Unless you starved the motor of oil it's very doubtful. What's more probable is that some of your lifters are sticking and need to be disassembled and cleaned out. Take a video of the engine running with good sound quality and post up a youtube link for it. |

It might have been deprived of oil. Cause I have an oil leak I did not notice for a while. |

The bottom end of these engines are pretty solid. As stated above you only lose a bearing (wich causes rod knock) if you run it out of oil. That being said, the Japanese engine importers are pretty much out of G-10's. If you truly have a rod knock, your best bet would be to do a total rebuild, have the crank turned, order new bearings and put it back together. Buying an engine on craigslist is a crap shoot. You don't know what kind of crap your gonna get. If your situation is dire, I am not far and could come over and take a look. PM me if you want me to check it out.

Hey you're from WA! Sweet! Yeah, it could have been out of oil, I have no idea. Having said that, how do I do a rebuild? How much would it cost to have someone rebuild it? Cause I have no clue how to fix cars! I would love to know, but, sadly, i don't. :/ |

I am also listed in the "available mechanics" page. Well, for starters, there are a lot of how to's on here that can help you rebuild it, but it would probably be best if someone were to help you and show you what to do. The first step would be to remove the engine, get it on a stand, tear it down, and find out exactly what happened. If you don't need any machine work, you can rebuild it for a few hundred dollars. It all depends on what happened. But before you yank the engine out, I'd get a second opinion on the Knock, but if you did run it out of oil, you could have damage in the bottom end.

You don't even have to pull the motor at all to check for knock, just drop the oil pan. But first thing's first, video of the knock with engine running, no background noise, and do a slight rev as well. |

As I said before, you need a second opinion on the knock. A video as described above would help us do it on-line. As far as what would I charge to fix it, I kind of work on a sliding scale based on a persons circumstances and what all needs done. |

Video would be best because I want to see if the knock is louder on top of the motor or at the bottom of it. That's going to be the dead giveaway on where the issue is at. |

First thing to do is determine if the crankshaft sprocket bolt came loose. Very common problem and it sounds exactly like rod knock. |

How much oil did you have to add when noticed the leak? |
