OK, folks...I'm stumped...'99 1.0 5 spd w/ A/C....75000 miles, compression over 250 psi on all 3 dry. Car uses NO oil. I just installed 3techs' XFI cam & 8 deg+ timing gear....tried valve timing everywhere between 2 teeth advanced & 2 teeth retarded, & ignition timing from 0 to 12 deg. advanced. Just runs very rich at idle to appx. 2000 rpm. So far, my best setting is 1/2 tooth retarded & the ignition timing at 4 deg. BTDC. Only code it threw was a p301 code, & it only came up once. Put appx 400 miles on it since cam change, making the above mentioned adjustments slowly, 50 mile or so drive, city & highway, between adjustments. I'm THINKING I busted something or knocked something loose during the original install, but I'd figure it would throw a code if I did. I DID NOT YET mess with the TPS or any throttle body adj's....if I had a bad (or disconnected) O2 sensor, wouldn't it show me? Scan guage tells me my IAT sensor is working. Car doesn't run bad, just a very lumpy idle & the smell of gas @ low RPM...once it's up to speed, it runs ok, but mileage is down slightly. (appx 2 MPG) Thanks in advance for the help....doug7x |

For some reason my mind goes straight to vacuum leaks - Have you checked to make sure all your vacuum hoses got reconnected and/or aren't leaking? |

I did check for missing lines or obvious leaks, but since my thinking is that a vac leak would lean me out rather than make it richer, I didn't spend a lot of time looking for pinholes & such. Do you think it would be possible for one of the O2 sensor circuits could be damaged & calling for a "full rich" mixture & still not throw a code? |

Ok , I did check for leaks...nothing detectable....Is there an idle mixture screw somewhere on the TB like on an old carb'd engine?....everything else seems OK...just very fat under 2000 RPM....I'm out of ideas....mweb, this may be up your alley, & 3tech...I DO NOT think it's the cam...I had to hose something...just got to find out what.....I'm open to any & all suggestions...thanx...Doug7x |

Installing the cam and gear would not have these effects. I've done two 3Tech cams and it was not a problem. We haven't see mwebb since July 31. Here is a link to his O2 sensor testing: http://geometroforum.com/topic/4050888/1/?x=40 Post #19. My best guess... My single O2 sensor looked great until I pulled it out and replaced it with a NAPA Bosch sensor for $17. My sensor was broken. Probably why I could not get a good reading off it. My idle was rough and the speedometer needle has a little shake to it. When I pulled the brake booster hose off the booster my idle shot up to maybe 4,000 rpm. My OBDI only threw a code from time to time. The other option might be the Coolant Temp Sensor or anything that might make the ECM think that the engine was cold. If you have a Throttle Body then there would be two (2) hoses on it above the alternator that will get as hot as radiator hoses. If you are over 200-220 psi you might have carbon built up in the combustion chamber. Is there any knocking? P0301 Code - Cylinder #1 Misfirecould be: * Faulty spark plug or wire * Faulty coil (pack) * Faulty oxygen sensor(s) * Faulty fuel injector * Burned exhaust valve * Faulty catalytic converter(s) * Running out of fuel * Poor compression * Defective computer. http://www.obd-codes.com/p0301 |

250psi is really high, what that means, IDK. |

Bad Bent, according to my scanguage, coolant temp is varying between 190 & 210 deg.F...this tells me that the ECU is getting the correct info from the coolant temp. sensor. I WAS getting some knock when my timing was at 12 BTDC, but since I temporarily retarded it to 4 BTDC, it's smooth...I'll bump it back up after I get this mixture prob corrected...As for the high compression numbers, I said that those were "DRY" numbers...that's not entirely true...I was in a hurry to get ballpark fig's, so I didn't pull the fuel pump relay. That would make my numbers "WET". As far as the O2 sensor goes, I'll have to wait till tommorrow to get my DMM from work to check them, but if a sensor was bad, wouldn't the ECU throw a code?..BTW... I DO NOT suspect the cam...no way it would affect the mixture this much...I think I knocked something loose during the install, I just don't know what....Anyone else have any ideas???...thanks again...Doug7x |
