Timing/idle woes

Hmm, so my car has been acting weird ever since I brought it back to life. Well, I wouldnt really call it lively. I bought the thing without a head, put a head on it, and it idles funky. The cam and crank gears are lined up with their respective marks, but the only way to get the thing to run halway decent is to turn the distributor all the way back towards the firewall (which ends up being around 10-12 degrees btdc, I think) and to jerry rig the TPS. With the TPS set at 1v and the distributor timed at 5 degrees BTDC, it hesitates badly when snapping the throttle and usually the idle motor makes it idle at around two grand (not to mention the backfiring and almost no-starting condition). Compression is 185, 165, and 185, which I know isnt that great, but I dont think that is the problem, since the car runs fairly decent (though idles too high) when its advanced. Also, the idle motor doesn't kick up the idle whenever the a/c is on (I dont know if it is actually supposed to). I see a lot of people having idle problems here, I wonder if anyone has came into the same problem?? :x I love the metro, I'd hate to see it back off the road if I cant fix the thing.

I'd double check the alignment of the marks on both the cam and the crank - it's very easy to wind up off a tooth after reasembly. Messing with the TPS is not ideal TPS info here: http://geometroforum.com/topic/1341780/1/ If that all checks out then I would suspect the keyway in the crank as possibly being damaged (rarely seems to happen on G10s, more common on G13s).

Idling at 2k makes me suspect a vacuum leak, check/replace your vacuum lines. Also double check the vacuum line to the MAP sensor. Good Luck!

I just posted the timing mark pictures at this post: http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=541946&t=4492793 I'll add that the dots are not perfect.

You cam also check for vacuum leaks at the PCV valve (stuck open), and spray intake gaskets with carb cleaner to see if the idle raises or lowers.

it hesitates badly when snapping the throttle and usually the idle motor makes it idle at around two grand For me this was a sticking throttle plate that the PO "adjusted" to up the idle. It is the Allen screw that the throttle cable attachment rest on. It should not be changed.
The idle speed adjust screw can be changed, however. Click on Timing.

Got 70 MPG?

If you only have about 10-12 degrees of advance then it sounds like your cam is retarded one tooth.
