My girlfriend's 95 3cyl with 158k developed a slight tapping at idle & slightly above that disappears at about 2000rpm and up. It sounds like it's coming from the cam area near the front (belt side) of the engine. It kinda sounds like a maladjusted valve and I was thinking possibly a collapsed lifter? Is there an easy way to check if the hydraulic lifters are working properly?

Also, when I did a compression test a few months ago, one of the cylinders was a little low 175vs210, but I don't recall which one. I'm not sure if that symptom will help rule something out

The lifters are known to get clogged up with carbon. To inspect, you must remove the valve cover, timing belt, and cam. Pull out the lifters and check them for spring action with your thumb.

Got 70 MPG?

When lifters are noisy, their sound usually doesn't go away at certain RPMs...
The first thing that came to mind reading the first post was rod knock, but that's very uncommon for these cars. Unless the car has been run dry on oil or the head gasket is leaking, it's probably not rod knock though. I'm just thinking out loud.

A video or sound clip might help someone to better identify the source.

Sorry, no video. I changed the oil yesterday and that seems to have solved the clacking. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that's all it needed. Thanks guys!
