I have a 1991 Geo metro 1.0 5 speed ive had the car about a year trouble free. i got in it to go to work one day and about a 1/4 mile down the road it started missing and only missed for a few seconds then stopped and ran fine. well a few days later it did it again but for a longer distance. well over the past few weeks its continued to get worse. the miss is a lot worse and for a lot farther distance. ive put new sparkplugs, wires, cap, and rotor button and cleaned my egr. and the problem is still there. It only does it after its sit for a while and the motor is cold. it dont start missing till i drive it for atleast 1/4 -1/2 miles some times maybe farther. and it will miss bad and has stalled out a few times and started back up with trouble. but it will usually miss for about a mile then clear up and give NO other problems. Any suggestions?

Just a shot in the dark, But it sounds like 20 years of crud in the fuel tank. Water and debris. After your car sits, it settles in the bottom of the tank near the fuel sock. When you start moving, it starts stirring around and just sucked to the fuel pump. After you have been driving a while, it gets put into solution. Drop and clean out the tank. New fuel filter too. Not sure if that is your problem, but either way it sounds like an issue with fuel delivery to me. Robertsdale. Nice. I'm originally from Fairhope, currently residing in Helena, south of Birmingham. Welcome aboard!

ya fairhopes right down the road and thanks man! im going to change my egr and fuel filter first and then see what happens and if it still does it i may drop the tank and see what kinda cruds floating around in there. crazy how it can run bad and spit and sputter and still get 45 mpg in town. so i did a compression test today when i pulled my plugs out. to look at them. plugs look good and compression was 180 165 180 i hear its common for the metro 3 cyls to have the middle cyl a few numbers under the ends. either way thats good compression numbers for a 200k mile motor. also took the distribor apart and made sure there was nothing loose in it just for piece of mind. car has gotten now to wear it stumbles a tiny bit at idle |

That's a spark issue. If it is backfiring, your cylinders are loading up with fuel. The backfire is the result of either the fuel getting ignited at the wrong time or too much of it getting ignited as a result of it not getting ignited on the previous combustion stroke.
