Hi y'all, I just got my first metro, after owning a Nissan truck for a while. I love the little thing, but it revs continually and with no real rhythm anytime my foot is not on the accelerator. Anyone have an idea? Thanks and God bless! Jonathan |

The idle speed control valves (ISC) on these little cars are notorious for dying an early death. They range in price from 250-500 bucks online or at the parts shacks. Or you could try to find the 10 dollar variety at the junkyard. If you have a constant high idle that never ever goes away, its a good bet that you have a vacuum leak. To torubleshoot listen for the hiss of a bad vacuum line. Use your eyes to find a bad line and if all that fails, grab your propane torch and start waving it around your motor (NO FLAME, JUST THE GAS) when the idle changes, you've found your vacuum leak. Be careful when you do this. Use common sense. If that ain't it, report back and we'll help you trouble shoot the thing. By the way, we're picture junkies here. Lets have a look at that beauty if ya don't mind! Welcome to the club! ---Rob |

Geo Metros are about the slowest cars on earth. Last week I lost a drag race to a fat kid on a bicycle. The real shame of it was the kid only had one leg. Seriously, I think performance parts are kind of a wast of time with these little cars...but that's me. That being said, there's several guys who have turbo charged their 3 bangers. T3Ragtop is one member who comes to mind. MRMURF is another geo guru who can tell you how to squeeze a little more speed outta these cars. He's also pretty handy with the transmissions and has helped me out a lot with mine. If you are really serious about getting some pep out of your 3 cyl, you might want to give Mike @ 3-Tech a call. He has some performance goodies that are pretty cool. I have interacted with him on the forums here and found him to be very knowledgeable and friendly. I don't have his contact info, but just do a search on 3-tech. His website should be VERY easy to find. I think you'll find that a good portion of the members on this site are more interested in fuel economy rather than performance. There's a TON of info on here about how to squeeze every possible mile out of a gallon of gas. The stock handling on these cars is pitiful. If you want to throw a little money at some performance goodies, I'd recommend going to a 14 inch rim/tire combo and installing some KYB struts. There's someone out there that makes a lowering spring for our cars too, (HK maybe?) although most will just tell you to cut the stock springs. I personally think that's a bad idea but that's just my opinion. Keep us posted on the repair. Rob |

Okay, sounds great! I got the car for gas millage so it kinda makes since to stick with that. I was wanting to try some rally type racing. Do the turbos help out with mpg at all? Jonathan |

I personally couldn't tell you but in theory they do. If you think about it, you are getting a lot more power out of the same displacement so if you were able to lower your gear ratio, I would think that you would see some benefit in the MPGs. On the other hand, you need to dump a lot more fuel in the engine to compensate for the additional air flow of the turbo so you might not see any benefit from a turbo. My official answer is: I have no idea. I will tell you this; I used to have a Subaru WRX and I drove it like I stole it everywhere I went and got about 25-27MPG. When my wife would drive it, she would drive it nice and easy and get 25-27 MPGs. That car was such a pain in my ass that I never want another turbo charged car ever again. Not only did it go completely to hell in a handbasket after 100k miles but the parts were outrageously expensive. As if that wasn't bad enough, every time I pulled out of the driveway some pimple farming 17 year old 'Tapout' model was trying to race me in his Civic with clear taillight lenses. Either that or the cops would follow me for MILES waiting for me to get on the gas so they could give me a ticket. OK, that's probably enough of my soapbox(ing) about turbos. There's another website called 'TEAMSWIFT' that might be another source of info for turbo charged three cylinder cars. Rob |

Welcome to your new forum, JLBethea! On the other hand if this is a new-to-you Geo then it would be an idea to simply replace the vacuum hoses for maybe $10? Take a sample in to a parts place and make sure the Inside Diameter is the same or a bit smaller. Should fit snug where you took the sample tube from. Maybe try a 1" sample? I got my Geo as a tuner. Little did I know it was an icon of gas sipping, of sorts. I wanted it to act like a well tuned 4 cylinder, hence the header, street/race cam, glasspack, yada, yada, yada and suspension mods. I got my wish and it still gets 56 mpg with the mods listed below. So my choice is to upgrade to "race" or better than OEM if possible. At least I have the roof scoop for rally racing But the Geo suspension is a little weak. The stock shocks are just so-so but there are $1200 upgrades at http://www.ssgti.net/main.htm (store/suspension) if you are inclined. The Swift stuff is the same as Geo stuff, mostly. Also we have mcmancuso offer to build tower braces at http://geometroforum.com/topic/4169760/1/?x=40 if he has any left.

I have seen faulty engine temperature sensors cause a symptom like this a number of times. (Not specifically to Geos) Try unplugging the sensor (the two-wire one for the computer) and see if the revving stops. |
