Engine Swap Compatibility

Well, the engine in my 99 Lsi is pretty much gone. I found it to have a bad woodruff key this spring, with the crankshaft slot slightly worn. It has started doing the same thing it ws doing prior to the repair, so I'm pretty sure it's time to replace the engine. I've found an engine from a 96 4 cyl (mine is 4 cyl. also) for $100. I would like to know if this is a direct swap or, if not, what would need to be retained from my engine to make it work? Thanks in advance...

Good bye

Nope, different bird. The block and crank might work though, the pistons won't have enough valve reliefs for all your valves.

That's what I was afraid of. I'll keep searching. Thanks!

Got 70 MPG?

You need to look for a 4 cylinder from 1998 and on for it to be a direct swap. Basically stay away from the Geo Metros and search for Chevy Metros.

Got it! If I can't find one I may start looking at other engines to swap in, like a swift 1.6L engine. I know it would require some modification, but would be a blast to drive.

There is a G16, but not in a Swift. At least not in the USA. Trackers, Sidekicks, and Esteems got them, they look exactly like the engine you have now. You could trick up the G13BB you have now while you're rebuilding it, the G13BB bottom end is stronger than the G16A
