I'll post a few pics of the engine when I get home tonight.
Keep in mind the engine in this car is NOT original. Some one replaced it and wrote in the engine comp. "the engine is a 1997"
I have no idea what 4cyl engine it is.....
But like I said I will post pics and let you all at it......

Thanks much

Here's a few pics, Can any one tell me what engine this is.
I'm mostly concerned if it IS or is NOT a non-interference motor????

1.3 SOHC G13A, G13BA, G13BB= non interference

1.3 DOHC G13B=bye bye valves

removed pics

Thanks

Looks like a Single Overhead Valve to me.

Change the belt and you should be good to go.

YA HOOOOOOOO!
I plan on cutting off the broken thin strip of belt & placing it right back on the engine.
With the timing marks aligned.
If the engine runs, then I'll buy a new belt.
Thanks much

Yep, one cam gear, one cam. but what I don't like is the missing center crank bolt in this picture:

The crank sprocket bolt should be torqued down and with a little blue thread locker.

Crankshaft sprocket bolt
1994 and older Sprint.......................................................52
1994 and older Metro.......................................................81
1995-1996 3 cylinder........................................................81
1997+ 3 cylinder...............................................................96
1995-1996 4 cylinder........................................................79 foot pounds
1997+ 4 cylinder...............................................................96

Engine in the car you can feed a foot of nylon rope into the #1 cylinder through the plug hole at the start of the compression stroke (valves closed). Rotation will compress the rope until the torque wrench clicks at 79 fp. Rotate CCW a little and pull the rope out.

Any reason for twisting the plug wires? I like to keep them separated as much as possible.

This is how I got the car back from the garage.
I will go back to the garage after work today & ask if they still have the missing bolts.
Reason for plug wires: The garage had said the engine was junk, new plugs, so I pulled out the plugs for my other GEO. lol
Thanks

That is a G13BA, timing belt will not cause damage. You need to take off that lower timing belt sprocket and take a good look at the woodruff key and the slots in both the crankshaft and sprocket. If the bolt cam loose and the sprocket wobbled around slamming against the key, it could have damaged the crankshaft and maybe that's what your mechanic was talking about.

I wouldn't deal with these guys again if you can avoid it. :shake If not, then you are now THE mechanic. :thumb
Returning a car with missing parts? That's just wrong. You deserve more respect.
They don't know how easy it is to work on and may look down on small cheap cars.

Members have been told they don't make parts for Geos anymore. Even the local NAPA counter person said it would be hard to get parts for my '91. I said 'That's OK, parts for a Suzuki Swift will work, I'm not proud.' Then he looked it up and the EGR gasket was 1 day away. Counter guy #2 found the Bosch O2 sensor in stock. :lol

Click on: Daigrams 95-97 and the #2 listing on '95 Crankshaft & Piston for the diagram and parts list for what you are missing..

Don't know if this will help but your picture shows a five bolt crank gear and the timing belt has round teeth. Somewhere I read its supposed to have a square tooth belt. On my standard trans and it might be the same for the auto trans there is a slot on the bottom of the bell housing where you can put a screw driver or some other tool that will lock out the flywheel and then you can torque the
crank gear bolt. 1.0 and 1.3, 94 lb ft torque crank gear. These settings are for a '99 Metro. Hope this helps. :)

:die Sorry to say I gave you some bad advice. Found out that the 5 bolt crank gear DOES take a round tooth timing belt. :banghead Have to replace the water pump and belt tensioner so I looked into that question. My Apollo geez !! :-/

I believe you are OK. My metro was missing badly at low idle and had no power and kept getting worse. My timing belt cover had holes in it so I decided to replace it and the belt. When I took my cover off, I noticed my belt was off by 1 tooth! Also, the "key" was bent and needed replacing but the bad part is that the slot on the crankshaft where the key fits, is damaged slightly; kinda wollered out. (Have to look that up in a southern dictionary!) The sprocket has too much play in it. Between being off 1 tooth and the key/slot being bad, that was retarding my timing. I put a new key in there for the time being, replaced the belt and cover, and WOW, it runs great with plenty of power. I wll need to either replace the crankshaft or have the slot welded back full and re-cut a new slot.

OK, Thanks for all the help so far.
I stopped in at the Garage the car was at, & the guy still had all the missing parts bolts, pully, etc.
Yahoo :rocker

I' m going to take a look at the crankshaft slot when I get home from work today.
Quick Q:
When I place the timing belt back on.......
What direction should I turn the crank & cam to line up marks?
Thanks again :cheers

Got 70 MPG?

Doesn't matter, the motor is non-interference, so any way you want to turn it that works for you. I personally turn clockwise to prevent loosening one of the bolts.

Key way looks great. Should be no problem.
Thanks

Update:
Aligned timing marks & placed old chewed up timing belt back on.
Raised & mounted engine back up.
Connected battery & she started right up! ran great for approx 1 min before I turned the engine off.
Now I'm off to buy a new timing belt & put every thing back together :cheers

Thanks very much for all the help! :thumb

One very happy camper here! :cheers :D :rocker
