Crankshaft gear and woodruff key?

Hey all,

I finally figured something out on my geo. Its a 95 with a 1.3. I noticed when I put everything back together and got it running that the crank pulley wobbled a bit causing the belt to squeak then eventually slice off a row of the belt. That, and for some reason, the timing changed. So, I figured out that the bolt on the crank gear was hand-tight. I wanted to see if the key was bad, but for the life of me I couldn't get the gear off. So, I put the bolt back in, and tightened it up good. Threw it all back together, and it runs better than it ever has. Only thing is, the crank pulley still has a slight wobble. Its not tearing up belts, but I worry about the key snapping. What do you all recommend I do?

Don't start the engine. Just don't do it. The rpm's of the engine will make the wobble worse and once it is past a certain point in time, the crank will become damaged by chaffing of the woodruff key. i.e. the slot will become unuseable.

Don't run the engine. Pull the crank shaft sprocket and inspect the sprocket, the woodruff key and the crankshaft groove. Lay the pulley on a flat surface to check for flatness.

If you continue to run the engine without said inspection YOU WILL DAMAGE SOMETHING BEYOND REPAIR.

I was afraid of that. The crank gear is really stuck on there. I tried with a gear puller, and it wouldn't budge. Any ideas on how to get it off? Should it be on there that tight?

It's a slip fit. Tight if dirty, but it should come off with minimal effort. I'm sure this isn't always going to happen, however I have no personal experience with the hard to remove crank gears.

Got 70 MPG?

If it isn't sliding off easily and a gear puller isn't cutting it then the damage is probably already done. :(

Have you tried prying on it with a pickle fork? Pry a little, turn the crank, pry some more, turn the crank again, and keep repeating. Good luck.

Great idea Starscream. Never thought of that. I have another gear if I can get this one off. Hopefully the crank is ok because this car runs and drives fantastic.

Oh, I see you're in the rust belt,95metrO. I bet it's rusted solid onto the crank! :'( Hit it with some PB Blaster and let that soak in for a few minutes.

When mine was stuck, I found I needed some leverage so I put one of the pulley bolts back in and then used a wonder bar to pry it off. Once you move the gear one or two MM it should just pop off.

Hit it with the PB Blaster this morning and by mid morning give it a whirl, again.

I certainly will try that. Unfortunately, I drove the thing to work this weekend, and will be here until late Sunday evening. Im just gonna have to baby it until I get the time to work on it. Thanks!
