I was at a junk yard today and seen xfi with frame rot but still has the engine and tranny. Not sure on the condition of both but what should I expect or offer. Should I take anything else. I have 97 3/5 and been getting only 42mpg 13inch tires and tranny from a 92. Thought the xfi would help with the mpg. Next year getting some 14x6 aluminum aftermarket rims. |

To me an unknown condition engine & tranny would be worth $150 +/-. The XFI tranny alone will help with the mpg's. Driving habits has a lot to do with fuel economy. My last 10 tank average is only >42 mpg. In the real world, the 50+ comes from the guys who have longer drives and are "trying". I want an XFI tranny for a different reason. Then I can drive 80mph without reving 3500+rpms.

I think $200-$300 is fair. $200 if you pull it, $300 if they pull it. Since there's frame rot, you can assume it's in there because of that rather than blown tranny or engine, but that is purely an assumption. You'll have to scope it out & use some deductive reasoning. |

In your 96 did you just put in the xfi cam and the xfi tranny. I assume you could not use the computer from the xfi? |

Whether the XFi trans helps you or not depends on how you use car. If you use the car as a freeway commuter, the XFi trans will help a lot. It will lower your cruising RPM at freeway speeds so the engine will have to work less, thus saving fuel. If you use the car as a delivery car (in town) then the XFi trans may hurt you. The short gears in the trans you have now allow your engine to do less work in stop-and-go traffic, thus saving fuel. This is especially true with the later, heavier '95-up Metros. Your engine will have to fight that high final drive ratio every time you take off from a stoplight. The heart of ANY XFi motor is the cam. Nearly all the rest of the motor is the same. The XFi used 2 ring pistons as opposed to 3 rings on all other models. This has a negligible effect on economy. The computer in the XFi was a little different, too, but since your car is a '96 it has OBDII. You won't be able to use the XFi computer anyway. The XFi cam has a lower lift, lower duration, and 6 degrees of built-in timing advance. An XFi cam really changes the nature of the engine in a Metro. You will have MUCH more lower-end torque, which allows you to shift earlier and use less throttle when accelerating. The downside of this is a motor that almost completely runs out of breath at 4000 RPM. But if you do nothing else...NAB THAT CAM. Edited by Cobrajet25, Nov 1 2011, 10:44 PM.

Correct. I have the same combo. XFi cam & tranny will get you an instant 5-10 mpg increase depending on how you drive. |

The cam is quite a bit easier to to yank off then pulling the motor and trans...when i got the cam im pretty sure the only tool i used was a 10mm wrench....the plastic covering the timing belt was either already cut or pulled off. |

Hey guys I will go get the cam from the xfi. Does anyone know if I will need the cam gear sprocket or can I use the one that is on my 97. Just need to know what I need to pull. |

But if they throw in the gear for cheap why not? Only issue will be if it has round or square teeth. Actually, I'd pull it as a unit so you might be able to install it as a unit. |

You will need to use the sprocket from your '97. The earlier cars use a timing gear set with teeth that are a different shape. Did this exact swap about a month or so ago. |
