My brake lights stopped working today. OF COURSE the day I go get it inspected. Go figure. worked this morning. anyway I think its the brake switch on the pedal. I noticed I don't hear the clicky clicky of the switch any longer. First where is this thing? whats it look like? is it something I can "unplug" and replace or am I going to be doing more work than that? is this a part I can buy at the store or do I have to order online. if anyone has pictures that would be great. its VERY hard for me to access that portion of the car I felt around but could not feel the switch but I did not try hard today (raining) |

The easiest way to get to it is assuming the "Grumman Position" But I don't know if thats an option in your case. The switch is a simple SPST momentary on the 12v line going to the brake lights. Test for 12v on one side, ground on the other when the brake pedal is up, 12v on both with the pedal down. Sorry I can't remember the wire colors. Not sure but I bet its an off the shelf part. You might be able to use your clutch switch temporarily for you brake lights, I think there the same. Swap the switches and just jump the clutch plug. Good Luck!

Number 14 is the switch. Number 6 is the button that the switch rests on. http://www.genmotorinfo.com/FullImage.aspx?ccId=455849523&ppId=366054400&ppInfo=1989-1994+M%2cClutch+%26+Brake+Pedal+Parts%2cManual+Transmission+-+SU00040 (many thanks to Jittney for all her hard work with these diagrams!) You should be able to see the connector, by standing on your head, and looking just beyond the steering columnby the brake pedal. I just looked. On my 91, the connector is visible. Looks like white & green wires. It appears that the switch would be more easily accessed by dropping the steering column. But it still looks snug. |

what fuse? brake lights don't have fuses at least not on my jeeps they don't :-) let me know which fuse I will check it. I am pretty sure its the switch since I don't hear it clicking anymore but will check both. |

15 amp stop fuse. Always when diagnosing electrical problems, start with the most obvious, lamps and fuses. I have never seen a car yet that did not have a fuse to the brake lamps. Sometimes they are incorporated within another ciruits fuse but nevertheless they are fused. Here is a bogs scan

EDG. your a genius I am a moron. it was that stinking fuse. 10second fix. actually 10 minute 10 seconds to replace 9:50 to find another stinking fuse :-) hehe also took the opportunity to replace my third brake light with an LED array. I might go with TWO arrays since they should fit inside the housing. 1 is 2-3 times brighter than the stop bulb but brighter is better in my book :-) would still only take 4 watts to run 2 of them :-) if they hold up in their I will replace the other bulbs with these arrays. nope. warm white. I got a nice deal 2 watts warm white $5 a pop shipped. incredibly bright. I have been testing one as my dome light (too bright actually) and so far its held up (1 year now) so I am going to start installing them everywhere. |

Test it and compare to your stock incandescent bulb - the spectrum is not right and the output will be dim behind the red filter. Been there, done that. Don't use white leds behind red lenses, especially for your brake lights. (and this is the last I'll post about this) Edited by JellyBeanDriver, Oct 29 2011, 12:27 PM.

JBD. I am no newb. I am not talking about a "little" brighter. Night and Day difference. you do realize its the same spectrum as the stock bulb right? they are both warm white around 2500-2700k I have such an overkill of lumens the losses going through red lens just don't matter :-) especially when I get them for $5 a pop. I think I might have a spare "third brake light" if I do I will put both side by side in the same picture :-) Edited by nerys, Oct 29 2011, 03:39 PM.

have not gotten around to it yet. Still have to find my "spare" third brake light and wire it up so I can photograph BOTH lit at the same time in the same picture. been working every day this week except today and today I have the Van at home (don't trust those frame horns I NEED them to stay straight and true till tomorrow when we weld them up. One of the LED arrays died on me (vibration?? or just bad circuit) so its only ONE array now and its still as bright or brighter than the original T10 bulb that was in their. I will take a picture of it "as is" tomorrow night if I remember to :-) |
