so today i had to pass someone real fast to avoid getting hit. i ended up going 40 mph in second gear. this is way past the shift light, but i have no tachometer so i dunno if this is too fast for 2nd or not. afterwards i noticed my car idles rough then rallies and idles smooth then sometimes repeats. also i think i ruined the clutch, after instinctively shifting into 3rd instead of 4th the clutch doesn't work as well as it used to. would going 40 in 2nd gear hurt the engine and cause it to act funny like it is now? |

Nah man. You weren't even close to hitting the fuel cut. Even if you were to hit the fuel cut, your car should still run perfectly fine. I hit the fuel cut at least once a week to keep the combustion chamber clean, and my engine runs perfectly fine. 210 psi on all 3 cylinders with 235k miles. |

You're fine with 40 in second. Not enough information to explain the other symptoms. I hit 55 in 2nd, and 77 in 3rd is not an issue. (3.79 transmission) |

Yeah I wouldn't worry to much, I've taken my 94 metro to 25ish on 1st, 40 on 2nd, and 60 on 3rd. I only hit these speeds when I am passing those damn tourist!!! Can you tell me how hitting the fuel cutoff cleans the combustion chamber??? |

Fuel cut entirely cuts fuel until a predetermined rpm is reached. It's a safety feature. Combustion chamber gets no heat because there's no fuel. Technically it's neither lean or rich since there's no fuel in the cylinder.

If you baby your car, then drive it like a rental car you likely knocked some carbon loose. Typically after you do this the car seems to come alive and has "improved" performance. You may of stretched the clutch cable if you jammed it to the floor in your fight or flight response and need to readjust the cable. I typically shift out of first at 20, 2nd at 40, 3rd at 60, then shift to 5th. I typically only use 4th gear in 35mph zones to keep from speeding and 3rd in 25mph zones for the same reason. In those cases I shift 1,2,4 or 1,2,3. My biggest mistake driving a stick is not down shifting enough to get the acceleration needed, so I do a double down shift. If I think I need a cretain gear for a situation I go one lower to make sure I am in the power band.

well, though i sold it as an emergency situation it was more of a get the f#$ out of my way you're driving too slow situation, so i don't think i damaged the clutch cable with adrenaline lol. i know the clutch is going bad cus sometimes it won't catch if i shift then floor it. also i tore the clutch up learning to drive stick on a 17 year old 150k mile clutch lol. good to know i can go that fast though. my car was having problems before, this just increased them. i'll be replacing the head soon so i'm hoping that clears things up. Does the shift light come back on at redline? I didn't know there was a fuel shutoff on these cars...? |

Shift light comes one depending on throttle position and engine load. |

What does it matter? haha the shift light is there to save gas! You won't be doing that at the redline. lol |

I don't need a shift-light period, but if it came on again at redline this would give it a practical use for me just in case. What rpm is the fuel shut-off, I've never hit it. |

Its my experience it has a mind of its own. Ive seen it come on, then go out, come on again, then go out, then come on again as you wind up the engine. I a, guessing it senses vacuum as one of its triggers.
