When I had the 3.79s in the DS, I was typically running much higher speeds and rpms. No worries. I was coming out of 3rd at about 7200rpm at about 85mph. And it was not even near red line. Mind you this car has a Weber and MSD ignition. What other symtoms are you having with this clutch issue?

Not on a carb.

If it has a carb, it may have points. Points can bounce and valves can flutter.

Mr Murph has removed the fuel injection and has an aftermarket computer controlling the spark. What he is saying here is that the engine can take FAR more rpm than the stock computer will allow. I think I've read 3Tech say 9000 rpm box stock.

9 grand? I dont think I want to wait on thr side of i95 for a tow truck and risk getting runned over to retreve my pistons that were sent through the hood. :D Ill save cruzing at 9 grand for a car with a rotary motor in it.

not a lot of rotating mass on these engines so I can see that high rpms aren't out of the question, Anyway obviously I dont have a carb so I was more so just asking about the stock ecu and if there actually is a fuel cut off or if the fuel system just won't flow enough after a certain point. just seeking some definitive info about the fabled fuel cut-off I guess

Yes, there is definitely a fuel cutoff, I think it's at 6800. That's going to have no effect on over-revving caused by downshifting into the wrong gear though.

I hit 57mph in 2nd gear with a 4.10 ring and pinion when it cuts fuel @ 7,000 rpm. I've beat up my g10 for 40,000 miles with ZERO issues. I just change the oil religiously

Does the shift light come back on at redline?
Its my experience it has a mind of its own. Ive seen it come on, then go out, come on again, then go out, then come on again as you wind up the engine. I a, guessing it senses vacuum as one of its triggers. :popcorn
This brings me to my other question. Why a shift light? And does anyone pay attention to it?

I do because it is annoying. :lol

Why? Fuel Economy. Obey the light and you do not get into the upper regions or rpm and power. It's set at about max torque. And it's not technically and "idiot light" but it shares the same panel with them. :whistle

But I follow my tachometer more and try to keep the rpm below 3,000 when I'm in fuel conservation mood.

Shift light is for economy only. I shift regularly (at least 80% of the time) at 6200 or higher. I generally go into 2nd at 25, 3rd at 55-60, and 4th at 75. I can take 3rd higher but I generally cruise at 75 so then i just shift 4th then 5th. I am inclined to agree with whover posted that you probably blew some carbon loose that now needs to burn up. If this is the first time you've gone up to 40 in second, your engine is FULL of carbon. :smackface Oh, by the way, my engine has 3TECH performance cam, +4 cam gear, bored .020 over, and driving like this I still average 41 MPG. I love my metro.

Sheesh. I went with the 3tech economy cam the 10+ timing sprocket. 0.75 bore on the cylinders. and I average 52 mpg. Worst tank was 44 mpg and the best 59 mpg. Its plain to see we drive very differently.

Knowing this about the shift light I will start shifting when it cimes on. It will be interesting if I get better mpgs.
