so, i was thinking id like a new windshield..... out to the garage to research the project. my questions.....: is "A" part of a windshield replacement or is that a specific metro item? "A" is still fairly soft and pliable, i may be able to save that, but "B" is another story. can i find the "B" trim new? "B" scares me, its sun baked, brittle, and fragile....im afraid to try and remove it...one wrong bend and "SNAP". but its going to have to come off to replace the windshield. i know i dont want "wayne the window guy" and his implements of destruction removing 11 year old, sun baked, brittle window trim. ill remove the trims myself before the replacement. has anyone been through this? ![]() Thanks Edited by 1.0smallblock, Oct 30 2011, 04:25 PM.

Hey small block, I am here to the rescue. Trim piece B is very easy to get off. Start off at the front corner of the windshield with a small flat head screwdriver. Pry it up a little, until you can get your fingers underneath. You might notice some metal "X"'s inside the drip channel. Those x's are what keeps your trim in place. The sides of the trim are metal and the just pop onto those x's and stay secure by friction. Now, don't go hog wild and start ripping the trim back. Take your time, be gentle. My club footed brother pulled the trim off a 4 dr at the PnP a couple of days ago, and if HE could do it, you certainly can. Easy stuff. IDK about the part A. Maybe it's the same as B. I "think" it's a piece of the rubber window sealer. Bad mojo if it is FUBAR'ed. Good luck. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I have a '93 that I'm repainting. I'd like to pull off and replace the upper and side windshield molding. Last night I tried pushing it off, out parallel to the window, and a piece of the molding snapped off. Should I be prying it off, up and perpendicular to the window? Here are some pics of my progress. The driver's side I haven't touched: ![]() The top: ![]() The passenger side that I broke: ![]() ![]() Here's a place I found to buy the replacement trim: http://www.gm-parts-dealer.com/parts.htm Thanks for any help. - Brian |

Thanks, that helps a lot. I"ll try prying up and out tonight. I posted my question because I was concerned that my '93 might differ from your '00. What the he##, I'm just going to go at it tonight. Since I hope to replace them anyway, and one's already partly broken, I won't worry about ruining 'em. I'll post what I find with some pics in a couple of days. - Brian |

bkgeig, it is different. The Gen III models '95+ have a piece of trim that starts at the bottom of the windshield and goes all the way to the back of the car. It is a rubber covered metal strip held in with plastic clips IIRC. Very hard to find I think. The rubber molding you have on yours is on all models. it just goes around the windshield. I think any glass shop should be able to get it for you if you can't get it from your link. You really can't save the rubber one. There usually very sun rotted. Pull it off and replace it.

I tried to remove the passenger side molding last night and in the process cracked the windshield. Looks like this job just got bigger and more expensive. Oh well, the windshield has become so scratched that it's hard to see out of when the sun hits it just right. I've known for a while that I would have to replace it eventually. Now I have to. It might be possible to remove the molding on these cars with a heat gun and a lot of patience, but I wouldn't recommend it. As far as I can tell, the molding is a "U" shaped piece of plastic that is wrapped around the windshield before the windshield is glued down. It was never meant to be removed independent of the windshield. I think most shops should be able to use a universal molding (which is cheaper) when replacing the windshield. That's the route I hope to take. I'll post some pics of the new molding and windshield, which probably won't get replaced for a while. Here's a pic of my stupidity:

Well, I was wrong. The side and top moldings pulled off pretty easily with a heat gun and some elbow grease. I started at the bottom, applied heat and slowly pulled the molding out. Leather work gloves helped. I still need to get the windshield replaced eventually, and I'll have to decide whether I want to use generic/universal molding or OEM, but at least for now I can continue painting: My Rustoleum Paint Job |
