so i took my 97 Metro in to the shop here on FT Knox to get it checked out. They tell me this thing is a "death trap". they told me the body was so badly rusted that a big bump could cause serious damage and that the break lines from front to back were so badly rusted they could busrst at any time.

The guy i bought it of of was a retired Army guy and i figured he was a person with integrity......he told me the car was in great shape and had no issues other than the gas tank and oil leak(wich i fixed) other than that he said it was the best running car i would find for 1200 bucks. I call the guy and explain to him what the mechanics told me and he hung up on me....and he moved to Florida, is there anything i can do about this legaly? from what his post was in craigs list and the actual truth?

Consider it a lesson learned and move on. Do your homework as well as possible before plopping down money on a car.

Well usually an Army Vet like myself and others i have seved with have Loyalty, Respect, Honor, and Integrity. That is what we live by (loyalty duty respect selfless service honor integtity and personal courage) So naturaly i thought he was the same as me and would not screw over a Vet!

Its sad and I know what you mean about a comradery among service members. I too as well served in the US Airforce and I fully cherish some of the people I met while in there with some memories that will last my lifetime. I also met some thieves and backstabbers among other undisireable traits in some of my fellow airmen. Its sad but true. We can only control ourselves and at times not even that, but try to treat others as we would have them treat us, and that is not always easy to do.

Once a used car is purchased, whether from an individual or from a dealer, it is UNLESS OTHER WISE STATED BY CONTRACT an "as is" deal, which means that you have little to no protection under the law.

You should always very VERY carefully look over any vehicle you purchase and if you yourself are not mechanically inclined, (and even if you believe you are), you should often times have the car inspected by a 3rd party professional shop (not your buddy Harry who tells you he can spot problems by lifting the hood and kicking the tires :-/ ).

This varies little from state to state, however your particular state may indeed have some protection for you, by all means do the research by consulting with an actual lawyer who practices where you live. Consultations are often free, especially to vets like yourself, just don't be surprised to find out what was said above is what is fact there as well.

Having said that, that doesn't mean your purchase is a total loss either. Many mechanics have seen these cars in good shape and declared them to be death traps, and cars probably in worse shape than the one you have have been successfully brought back from the brink to go on to many more years of good service.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do with yours :)
