Hi- I'm a new member of the forum. We live in NE Iowa and are trying to find a good mechanic who likes to work on Geo Metros. We are finding out that many mechanics 1. don't like working on Metros, or 2. think that we are crazy for trying to keep an old car (it's a '97) up and running instead of getting something newer (even though we couldn't buy anything newer that would get over 35 mpg). Does anyone know of a good mechanic anywhere near us? Thank you very much! susangeometro |

Welcome to the club. If you're prepared to get grease under your nails then there are lots of virtual mechanic here able to assist. Other than that, tell them if they finance a new car for you, they can have their wish. Edited by TheKid, Nov 17 2011, 03:54 PM.

might want to start by taking a look at the "mechanics available" posting. try this: http://geometroforum.com/topic/1644179/4/#new and if that dont work then start searching this list (members by state) http://geometroforum.com/topic/4381782/1/ Edited by Old Man, Nov 17 2011, 05:02 PM.

Welcome to your new forum, susangeometro! And check back often to see if we have someone in the area. Are you willing to travel to say Madison, La Crosse, Des Moines or just how far? |

Welcome. Is your car running well? Pictures score big points.

I am from Iowa and near the quadcities. I do my own wrenching out of my house. Let me know if you need something. |

You are the mechanic now. No lip, just get a set of metric sockets and away you go. |

Thanks everyone! Will look into the options people have posted. Currently, our Geo isn't even starting. My husband really misses it. Bad Bent- we'd be willing to haul it somewhere for someone to fix it. My husband knows a fair amount about the electrical systems on cars and we know basic car repair stuff, but he just plain doesn't have time to try to fix it himself. We need to find someone else who we could pay to fix it. My husband knows all the details about what's been going on with it- I do know that it had trouble starting before- trouble code showed the cam shaft position sensor out- think that was replaced (no good), then a mechanic here replaced the ECM. Worked for a while, then quit again. Same symptoms. I also know that the synchros in the transmission are going out. My husband tried to get the mechanic here to put an oscilliscope on it and talk over the test results with him but the mechanic got really offended by the customer wanting to confer with him. Sigh. Well, we'll see what we can keep chipping away at!

Have we got an answer for that! Click on: mwebb's topics and mwebb's profile where you can PM or email him. He lives in New York but if you have a DVOM he will show you all kinds of oscilloscope graphs and talk you through repairs. He was last on the forum Nov. 24. The ECM was not the problem, it rarely is. Here is mwebb's thread on Test CKP and or CMP sensor.

Digital Ohm Volt Meter. You can pick one up at harbor freight for about five bucks. Glad to have you here on GMF. Too bad you live a whole state away from me or else I would take a peak at your situation. What are the symptoms of you non-start issue? Can you be specific? Thanks. |

Thanks. My husband would have known that-he's an electrical engineer! What I'm going to do is contact a couple people who are relatively near us and may be able to repair it for us. If they can't, I'll get my husband to sit down and type up specifics of what's been going on with the car. |
