We are trying to figure out where our oil leak problem, on a 1990 Geo Metro, is coming from. The oil is on the left side and coats the alternator along with the left side of the car body. Any suggestions?

could be the crank seal or cam seal my guess. Assuming you mean passenger side of the car

Once the timing cover is off, you will find it. We have a "How To" on crank seal replacements.

I had done this one "crank seal" last spring, but it ended up being the "cam seal" lol , It was fun. Best advice.. take your time if you haven't done it before 8^)

And check the air cleaner for oil. If there is oil sitting in the cleaner then your PCV valve needs to be changed and the "Y" tube cleaned out. It likely blew the cam seal out. You could remove the timing belt cover top bolt, pry it back a little and look in to see if you can see the cam seal - mine was sitting in the cam shaft right behind the cam gear. :shake

This link; Camshaft Swap will give you an idea on how it's done.

Ok going to admit a stupid mistake. I was in a hurry to get my metro back together following a engine rebuild. The new headgasket lasted a month,,disentigrated,,, So i had no choice ,had to get it running over thanksgiving weekend. I for some reason hadnt thrown out my old headgasket. Reinstalled it. in the rain, semi dark outside.well i started it up and was puking oil allover the alternator and what looked like the crank seal leaking. No oil was getting to the top half of the motor, (noisey lifters). Shut it off removed the head, gasket was on wrong,,,,,the oil galley or supply hole was covered, causing high pressure in the lower half thus blowing oil out the front seal. WAs exactly as you described here.So if the gasket is on correctly ,,id say u have a plugged hole :P
